Theodosia and Docytheus
« on: Friday 26 April 19 14:33 BST (UK) »
Looking at a tree for a friend and I find Docytheus Twigg, born in Bilston, Staffordshire around 1795-1800. Docytheus clearly had a job explaining his name and it's spelled every which way on various documents; he's down as Thayus at the baptism of one of his children and simply went as Daniel in 1851 census.

I've every reason to believe his brother was Benjamin Twigg bapt 1803 in Tipton, Staffs, and that leads me his parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth, and to other siblings -- Martha, Samuel, Joannah. But I can't find a baptism for Docytheus anywhere. However there is a baptism in Bilston in 1795 for a girl named Theodosia for this couple.

Right place, right time, right family, I could even believe that this is the right name simply turned around (as people say today, "I wanted him to be different!!") But Theodosia was baptised a girl and Docytheus was clearly male.

Anyone have any wise thoughts here?

His death registration gives his age as 82 in 1874 which gives a birth year of 1792.

Well if I am looking at the right couple the parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth (nee Smith), married in St. Peter's Wolverhampton on 8th April 1795.

If 1792 is correct for his birth year then he was born before his parents married.
