Registration of Females in Horsham Sussex
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 13:20 BST (UK) »
I've noticed 4 females registered in Horsham 1851, 1878, 1895, 1841 without Christian names, i.e. just Female Charlwood. I wonder if anyone has an explanation for this? Tried googling it but nothing obvious came up. A conundrum.

Either the name hadnít yet been chosen at the time of registration, or they dispensed with a given name because the child had already died by the time of birth registration.  Have you checked for corresponding deaths?

In Ireland this is quite common especially in the dense'ly populated area's of Dublin where you had possibly hundreds of birth's daily.
I can imagine the Matron standing at the maternity door saying male or female and noting parents names and then sending them off in batch form to be registered.
When i started into this genealogy lark i decided to look for my own birth registration which was in the 1950s my parents were living in South Dublin but i eventually found my birth as male on the North Dublin register because that's where the hospital was.

If you search FreeBMD birth registrations with just Female as a first name you get this message
Sorry, that search found more than 50000 matches and the maximum number that can be displayed is 3000. you get the same result if you put Male.

The final sentence in that link under 'Column 10 - Name Given After Initial Registration' says that 'These days there is a facility for names to be changed without baptism etc'.

When was that facility created, does anyone know?  I only ask because a friend gave an extra name to each of his children just before their first birthdays - because he could :)
