Preb[b]les in Kent c1500-1650
« on: Sunday 28 April 19 02:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone else here researching Prebbles [or Prebles] in Kent between the mid-late 15th century and mid 17th century?

My ancestor Parnell Prebble was born in Elham, and was the daughter of John Prebble who was born in about 1562 and died in Elham in 1637 leaving a Will (dated 22 February 1636).

John was married to Gillian West in November 1588. John's father appears to be Robert Prebble who was born in Denton in about 1530 and died in June 1589 in Wooton, Kent. Robert appears to have married a woman named Eleanor [possibly Wilstrop, Wiltrop or Wilthrop] in about 1557. She appears to have died in July 1591.

If anyone has any more information on the Prebbles or can help me confirm the ancestry of John Prebble [or of his wife Gillian West] I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks

Matt

There are indexes for Common Pleas records here:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/Indices/CP40Indices/CP40_Indices.html

And for a few Kings Bench records here:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/Indices/KB27Indices/KB27Indices.html

The front page for the site is here:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/

And there is a Wiki for the site. Many other records have been indexed (Chancery, Star Chamber, etc). These can be searched here:

http://www.uh.edu/waalt/index.php/Main_Page

There are about ten million images of records there, with an average of two images per side of parchment. Far less than 10% of that total have been indexed.

Also, we have kept the original spellings of surnames (Prebyll, Prebill, etc) so you will need to try all variants.

Thank you.

I've come across some of these records before but not the Common Pleas.

It is amazing what is available on the internet these days.

I'm off to have a look and see what I can find.  :D

I've used those indexes before and found a lot of references to my Kent ancestors, especially the Austen, Denne, Hever, Nethersole and Pym families.

The originals are at the National Archives in Kew and well worth viewing.
