Phoebe Shaw... what became of her?!
« on: Monday 29 April 19 03:30 BST (UK) »
Team

I have Phoebe SHAW baptised at Worksop Nottinghamshire on 11 Dec 1828 to George SHAW and Hannah PALMER.

On the 1841 she is with her maternal grandmother Dorothy PALMER aged 10.

On the 1851 she is with her brother John SHAW and his wife Alice.

On 12 Mar 1862 there is a marriage of a Phoebe SHAW to a James ISLEY at Hammersmith London.  Phoebe states her father as George SHAW, Whitesmith.  That is correct!

A daughter Emma born in 1863 in London and another in 1870 in Melksham Wiltshire.

Iíve found a Jame and Emma arriving in Queensland in 1863.

A son Edward was born to James and Phoebe in Sydney NSW in 1867.

I also found online that a James ISLEY and Phoebe Shaw ISLEY went to Canada and the USA and a death of an Edward ISLEY in 1951 in Los Angeles who stated he was born in Sydney Australia.

I think Iím looking for Ďanother pair of eyesí.  Iíve never heard anything about this before.  Iím in Australia and even though it was a long time ago, there is no family legend about another SHAW relative ever being in Australia.

Iím wondering if my Phoebe isnít the one who married James ISLEY but I canít find her on any census.

Regards Bitzar.

Hello,

You donít mention 1861 census - it is poor writing and on one site is transcribed as Phoebe Shane.
I have tried finding her or the other occupants on Family Search without success.

1861 19/70/19
Scarsdale Villas, Kensington

Phoebe Shane 34 yrs House Servant b Worksop, Nottinghamshire

It looks very much like Shaw.

Thanks

I couldnít find her on the 1861 or 1871.

Did I eventually find who I thought was them going to Quebec in 1872 though.

Iím now fairly sure itís her.  Her age is always at least 5-8 years out.  It seems she was older than James which might be the issue.

Itís interesting they went to Australia and the returned to England!

Appreciate all your efforts.

Iím also looking for her sister Mary Ann SHAW.  A more popular name than her sister unfortunately.  She was baptised at Worksop 01 Apr 1832.  She is with the family in the 1841 and 1851 but after that it becomes unclear.  Any ideas?!
