I wonder what he did as a living.... most unusual to have such a benefit I would have thought but amazing to read.

I was looking for an obit Cheran.  It is surprising that there isn't an obit for a man held in such high affection/respect.

I have found a mention here that he was in bad circumstances and there were arranging a benefit for him    http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article88216055

Helping Hands.—It having come to the knowledge of a few gentlemen that an old
Sandhurst resident (Mr. Holm, formerly of Steen and Holm, coach-painters) was in very afflicted circumstances, they met together yesterday evening for the purpose of devising
means to relieve his present distress.
...
In this deserving case, the object of sympathy is languishing in a sick bed, totally
incapacitated. There are six children, and Mrs. Holm is prevented from working on account of
her husband occupying nearly all her attention.

Interesting to follow on the his Wife Elizabeth next marries Marina Wood Bent and their residence was at Mendes's Royal Hotel, City-road south, when she died at the young age of 45 in 1890
