Need some help, please

Not been on here, for a while, so nay have posted to wrong board, so apologies, if I have.
I am trying to work out how to find the maiden name of someone, who married as a widow.
Both her and her new husband were both married before.
She, being Elizabeth Ellis,( her married name, to first husband)
Her second marriage was to James Ewins.
He was born in Mitcham, and I do have all his details, after his second marriage.
She was born in Battle, Sussex.in 1788.
I only know this from the 1851 census.
Any ideas how to try to go about finding her maiden name, or is it jmpossible, or a long shot.

When was the second marriage?

In 1861 she is widowed mother-in-law to Henry Heasman and Emma.  Have you checked out their marriage? (Though Emma might have married twice, also)

Added: Looks like Emma was a Ewins, born around 1825.

I had seen that census. I have also found a marriage, for an Elizabeth Ball, married to William Ellis, 1804, Hastings.. This wouldn't make Elizabeth very old, when marrying, if it were her, but it does seem to run in the family, so a possibility, do you think?

She would have been around 16 if her age on 1851 census was correct. Girls could marry at 12. She would have been around 37 when Emma Ewins was born in 1825. Pity she would have been past childbearing age in 1837.
Have you found any possible children of 1st marriage?

I can see 3 Baptisms for James and Elizabeth's children - Emily, Sarah, and Catherine, 1826, 1828 and 1830 in Mitcham.  Are there earlier children to them, or from his previous marriage, or are these the wrong children?

Elizabeth did have children, before her marriage, as she was married in 1825.
Her dau Catherine, also had children, before marriage. She was with her own family, with her children on 1851 census, and her children were giving their father's name as John Ewins, the name of Catherine's father, and Elizabeth's  husband.
But, on the 1861 census, they were Mannings. Hence the witness names on the marriage record, you found.

Sorry just re read your message.
I couldn't find children, of Elizabeth, from her 1st marriage, as not sure of either her husband's name, or her surname.
I know she married in Streatham, when she remarried, but was, originally from Battle, so could even have been in Streatham, when she married, the 1st time.

You called him James Ewins in your first post.

That is what I mean, by complicated.
Catherine's father was James Ewins. Her husband was John Manning. The name giving, as father, for her children, also I think on one of their marriages was John Ewins. A combination of both men's names.
