Royal Navy records how to find?
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 10:33 BST (UK) »
I have a Charles James Sidaway who signs up for 10 years in the Royal Navy in June 1861.  Later that year he is on HMS Styx. He was born in Devon.

We next have him getting married in Glasgow in 1867 and living there and then a Merchant Seaman by 1870.

I can find no RN record of him on line for the period after 1861 and wonder if anyone can kindly point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

Hi there, yes I have this and a couple of images of signing up papers but then that's it.  I just can't find any service record, or pension.

I'm trying to find out when he left - and why.

Many thanks

The National Archives guide to RN records suggests that the ADM 139 (and there is also an ADM 188 entry) are all that will be found.  Speculation -  served his 10 years after the age of 18, didn't serve long enough for a pension.

Thank you Max, I have the 2 x ADM's below.  It seems strange that he was serving in the Navy out of Plymouth, where his parents were and then 6 years later is living in Glasgow.

Would you know if the Navy ever dismissed people, or perhaps would there be records if he ran away?

Both dismissal and "run" as the RN put it would be entered on his CS record. but as his has nothing after enlistment I begin to suspect that perhaps he left after enlistment.  Many of the ADM 188 entries have no 1 year 2 year etc entries at all but I am at the limit of my RN knowledge here and would hope someone more versed in the ways of the Andrew will see this!
