Joseph Samuel FORD
« on: Sunday 05 May 19 07:15 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information regarding the life of Joseph Samuel FORD post 1965.

I know about his life up until then. He married Olive Margaret Ann DARRELL 1965 in Australia and he passed away 1997 in California.

But I have no idea what happened to Joseph between those years or what happened to Olive.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

When and where was Olive born, presumably Australia?

Did either of them have siblings, parents, who died between 1965 and 1997, whose obituaries could mention their whereabouts?

I'm not finding people born in California with those parents, but I don't know how responsive the California Birth Index is these days when looking for the mother's maiden name, with privacy concerns, etc. I haven't used it regularly in a while.

If I'm looking at the right people, his mother Nazella died in 1974.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/183258749/nazella-ford
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JKMB-H4H

If so, then from a tree on ancestry.com,
Nazella's husband was George Ford Sr who died 1962. His last mentioned residence was Montgomery, TX, in 1940.

Her son E.G "George" Ford, who would be Joseph S Ford's brother died April 29, 1983, Montgomery, Tx

Her son Johnnie B Ford, died 1967. last seen in 1940 in Montgomery, TX.

Nazella and George Ford's family was black according to the 1940 census. Does that rule them in or out?

The Social Security application for Joe Sam Ford born 3 Nov. 1927 and died 16 Jul 1997 has him listed as black.  It also says he filed a claim on 18 Nov. 1974, when he would have been too young for retirement benefits, and it says Disability Status: Disability denied - no record of type.  So sounds like he made a claim for disability, but was denied.

I also found a 1945 WWII draft registration card for him, which indicates he was a messman on a ship and was listed as "Negro."

Joseph S Ford's parents, George and Nazella Ford, are buried in Post Oak Cemetery, Montgomery County, TX. Her parents are buried there also. Father is on findagrave, mother's burial location from information on an ancestry tree.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/183258749/nazella-ford

His brother George died 29 Apr 1983, Montgomery County (exact date this time). He isn't on findagrave for Montgomery County. familysearch doesn't turn him up anywhere on findagrave.

His brother Johnnie died 13 November 1967 in Houston. (exact date this time). I don't see him at familysearch for findgrave either.

"The Collins & Johnson Funeral Home at 612 Avenue E in Conroe. The funeral home has served the community for more than a century.

"The oldest funeral home in Montgomery County still in operation today was established to provide Christian burial services for minority residents in a largely white community.

"The Collins & Johnson Funeral Home is located at 612 Avenue E in Conroe. For information, call 936-756-2311. For information on Conroe and Montgomery County history, visit www.heritagemuseum.us or call 936-539-6873."

This is a page on the county genweb site. The sidebar offers links for research, the library, etc, which might help.

Just in case: List of black owned funeral homes in Houston.

---------
I provided the information on the funeral homes, because a lot of African Americans use/used  a funeral program to provide obituary information. The program is passed out at the wake and funeral at the funeral home. This was because for the longest time the white owned newspapers would not carry obituaries or death notices for black people.

So, there might not be any obituaries to be found in the papers. If you talk to that funeral home in Montgomery Co, they might be helpful if you explain your connection and reason for interest. If they didn't conduct the funerals for the family, they probably know who did.

The cemetery, if you can track it down, might tell you who owned the grave, again if you ask nice and explain you are related and are looking for descendants of Joseph.

By the way, try the same stragegy for Joseph S Ford himself. Where would he have been buried from, as a black man dying in San Pablo CA? and go from there.

Best I can figure right now,
Any info on Olive's birth year and where she was last seen?
