looking for
« on: Monday 06 May 19 06:26 BST (UK) »
HI, this is hard but I'm searching for anything to do (especially his regiment ID) William Fletcher born 29/9/1913 Southbank in Cleveland.  d:18/9/2003. what i know is he joined as regular soldier 1932 East Yorkshire reg. He was in the BEF in France 1940, became one of the earliest parachutists joining 2 para battalion.  One of Major Frosts company in Bruneval raid 1941. Tunisia 1942, 2nd Battalion for Arnhem commanded by John Frost.  Had 1939/45 Star, African Star, Italy Star, French/Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal.  This is all i know of my grandfather, he died in Melbourne, Australia and there has been article written on him from bafa.org.au and that is about all i know, he married my grandmother Betty Readman (formally Norman) in the UK.  I have that type but i would like to know more about him.
I would really appreciate if anybody could even help in telling me how to get hold of his regiment number.  thankyou

No records online for the armed services from the early 1920 onwards so his will still be with MOD.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

You don't need his army number as long as you have his date of birth and you need his death cert.. If he died more than 25 yrs ago there is no problem accessing his records. Under 25 yrs it's the next of kin or by the next of kin's permission. It costs £30 and can take several months to get the documents.

Have you considered applying for his death certificate?

If he died in Australia, there are restrictions for members of the general public to access these, varies from state to state, but the restrictions are time limited.

So, for example if he died in Victoria, or New South Wales the restriction is 30 years (2019-30 years is a death to 1988 or earlier)....

The Vic BDM's death certs are quite informative,  :)

Just checked the Ryerson Index, and there's two newspaper cuttings that may have mentioned his WWII service number, and/or give you further information  :D
Herald Sun 20 Sept 2003, has the classified notice of his death
Herald Sun 10 March 2008 *yes, 2008  has a publication notice (Probate/Deceased Estate administration legal notice perhaps).

If there's no volunteer available to help with a lookup via that volunteer service, then perhaps you could consider asking a librarian :

and  :) https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/help/using-our-catalogue/accessing-eresources if resident in Victoria (each state has similar no charge facilities  :D  :D )
