tracing my grandmother
« on: Monday 06 May 19 11:01 BST (UK) »
my grandmother is Anne Jane McLennan born on 6/02/1873 in Resolis Ross and Cromarty, she moved down to London and went into service she was in Hampstead as a house maid at 10 Eton Square. she is still there in the 1911 census. she married Francis Kenny and had a daughter Lillian to him. between then and 1935 when she died in Urquart, Logie Wester she moved back up to Scotland without Francis. Is there any way I can find out when she moved back?

There are Valuation Rolls on Scotland's People but sadly no Kenny or Anne McLennan, although I note her death in 1935 is recorded in both names. It may be that she was with relatives.

It looks like her daughter married in 1935, if I  have the correct birth and marriage on free bmd.

1911 - Kenny    Lilian E    McLennan    Marylebone

Q/3 1935 - Kenny    Lilian E    Lake    Lewisham

Do you mean she left him?

Have you got a death year for him ** could he have passed away and that's why she moved back to Scotland?

** a family tree has a death for him in 1934 and another child before Lilian.

The marriage was March qtr 1911 but I can't find a 1911 census entry under Kenny or McLennan.  Need Francis's birth year to determine which of the many Francis Kenny deaths could be his

There may be electoral registers with them on in London if you have an address they were living to start from.

Francis Kenny died in 1935 in London while my grandmother died after him in November 1935. I have a copy of her death from Scotlands People, she died in Agneshill Ross & Cromarty and it was their daughter Lillian who registered her death. I@m presuming they all came back to Scotland some time after 1911, but I can't trace any record of that. My father was Hugh Albert McLennan on his birth certificate, which means he was born before my gran married Francis Kenny and he used Kenny most of his life. I can't find any record of an adoption. there are so many brick walls in my Dad and Grans history I would love to get some small lead that would give me more information.

No there wouldn't be any "official" adoption records in those days.  I believe 1926 was the first year but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I couldn't find your father or gran in 1911.

As suggested if she had relatives in Scotland she may have been living with them?
Were her parents still alive or a sister or brother perhaps.
