Petherick obituary
« on: Monday 06 May 19 21:02 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the obituary for Angus PETHERICK who died 30 September 2000 and was buried at Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast. His wife was Edith and she died in 1992. I have found his memorial stone at the cemetery. Any help for either of these is most appreciated.

Not the obituary you are looking for but according to Belfast Cemetery database
Angus Petherick, age 82, Buried 3 Oct.2000
residence - Orchard House Cherryvalley Belfast (Pa 10 Medway Street 1999)
https://www.radiushousing.org/housing/view/101164/orchard-house
http://www.housingcare.org/housing-care/facility-info-11187-medway-court-belfast-northern-ireland.aspx

Wife Edith died 7 May 1992 and her listing gives 10 Medway St. address-
https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialRecordDetails.aspx?RecordID=8757.8908

For reference here's a picture of the gravestone-

Recent obituaries are usually online but much more difficult to get ones from more than a few years ago (although very old ones often in online newspapers) It's possible that there would be Wills of estate paperwork on file in PRONI, Belfast which would list any children or relatives they had.

Belfast Telegraph, 29Aug.1963: … the R.U.C. stand at the Ideal Home Exhibition in the King's Hall, Belfast. Holiday now for winner AVERY surprised Mrs. Angus Petherick, of 198 Annadale Flats, Belfast, found herself the winner of Mr. Presents £2O prize. "I have no idea how I will spend ...

Many many thanks for taking the time to answer my question. You mention PRONI re wills . Is that accessible online for a request? My family will be visiting Belfast in the fall and we would like to locate and make contact with any living descendants of Angus.

I can guide you a bit,  it is essential you try and learn how to use a free website. You can copy the information from a marriage handwritten certificate  from https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/captcha.jsp if you don’t find it under church records change to civil records,  patience rewards you.

Its for your personal use otherwise read their rights. or buy a very cheap copy.  Search for William Petherick marriage 1904  to Margaret G(raham) Curry , you will only find Ms   Curry and her father by looking.  then by adding in anything else eg www.emeraldancestors.com and https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FY8M-124  Start making a familytree  you should find William Petherick has a father William with known occupation  but no  location.

I went to that website last instead of first. I was trying to link the few ie rare Petherick in Ireland here by working backwards

changing to the Curry family I could not find a painter in census or quick look at one street directory

The Presbyterian church named in the marriage details might well hold records of births?

Would a library in Belfast or the newspaper itself help you find the obituary?

Unfortunately with so many houses being burgled while people are at Funerals many people don't put Obits in newspapers...
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I wanted to thank all of you for your most helpful comments. I have now found death notices for Angus thanks to the Heritage Dept. at the library in Belfast. Ironically only one surname was given of descendants in all the notices but it was enough for us to make contact with her on Facebook. Amazing world, isn't it !

Thank you to the contributor who showed me the way around some Irish genealogy websites. I was able to locate the marriage of William Petherick to his wife Margaret. Both of their families, it seems, originated in Cornwall. My searching skills have never been tested in Ireland before and I have learned quite a lot from your post. Thanks so much.
