Death of Ann ELLIS in Barnsley
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 13:42 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I've got another question regarding a death in Barnsley between and 1841 and 1851, with the burial most likely to be at St Mary's.  I'm looking for Ann ELLIS, whose husband was Thomas.  She died before him (he was a widower in the 1851 census).  She was reportedly 60 at the 1841 census.

The two most likely candidates appear in the Jun Q 1842 or Sept Q 1847 death registrations for Ecclesfield, but I can't split them.  I guess in the end I'll order both certificates, but if someone has access to the burial transcipts that would be a great help.

Have you checked the 2 deaths using GRO online to establish their ages?

Thanks Carole

I did.  The GRO doesn't have a record of the 1842 death.  The 1847 death is of a woman aged 67, so that would most likely be her, but I thought I'd try and rule out the earlier death conclusively before ordering the certificate.

GRO say that the 1842 death for Ann Ellis was aged 27.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

19 December 1842 burial is at St Peter, Gildersome.  Ann's abode is Gildersome.

That's odd.  Googlemaps tells me Addingham is miles away from Barnsley, unless there's two.  ???

And if it is, how does it get to be included in Ecclesfield reg district deaths.  ???

From FreeBMD, the one buried in Gildersome is likely to be one of 4 registered in the Leeds district in Dec qtr 1842 or Jan qtr 1843 (one as Ann Jane).

The Addingham one is likely to be the one registered in the Skipton district in Dec qtr 1847.

Neither is what you'd call close to Barnsley.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
