John & Mary Jane McCalmont (nee Charles) COMPLETED WITH THANKS.
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 16:52 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

This is my first research in England so I hope it works out.

John McCalmont, born 1 June 1883 at Ballymoney, Islandmagee, Antrim, Ireland, son of Hugh McCalmont (1845-1887) & Sarah McNeilly (1853-1935) married Mary Jane Charles, daughter of Henry, on 3 April 1923 at Cathedral & Parish Church (C.O.E.), Manchester, Lancashire, England.

Here's the sticky part.

In Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester there is a burial of Mary Jane McCalmont on 30 June 1932. Findagrave has a photo of the headstone but it is difficult to read & the age at death impossible.

I'm not certain this woman is the one I'm looking for, but do not wish to spend 12 pounds through the Manchester pay per search on a hunch. I would like to know the woman's age; or who caused the burial. Can anyone help in this matter? And if you can find John, or family, all the better.

Just out of curiosity, why were 15 people buried in the same grave around the same time?

Thank you.

Roger

Don't think this is your Mary Jane.  According to Probate records she died 27th June 1932, wife of Gault McCALMONT.

Just out of curiosity, why were 15 people buried in the same grave around the same time?

Where there wasn't already a family grave, or possibly no family in the area to take on responsibility, then a burial would take place in a "common" grave with other "non-related" persons.

Sumi & heywood & BumbleB, thank you very much for the information. You are GOOD.

I believe you are right. The Hartshead Close McCalmont is most likely mine.

I wonder if the 15 corpses in 1 grave are standing up (no reply needed).

Thank you.
