Hi,

any dates for when

Simon Carruthers 30 & 32 John Street Langholm N.B. operated

and

A MacLagan Bank Street Galashiels

and

McKnaught and Son  31 High Street Peebles and Wigtown N.B.

and

Hunter  Hawick

(I am usually better than this at finding stuff)

Didn't there use to be a site that listed CDVs so you could compare the markings?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to RootsChat...there is a topic on Cartes de Visites and Cabinet Cards at the top of the board as a guide. Also you could google the names of the photographers followed by CdV reverse and you will see many images.

Hi, Fsfa.
Welcome from me, too.

This site has a good coverage of dating of cards:

http://www.phototree.com/images/phototree_paper_photographs.pdf

And this related one has a lot of examples:

http://www.phototree.com/gallery.asp?cat=70s&f0=1870s

Just be aware that they are American sites so there may be a few minor differences to British cards.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi,

Alexander Maclagan (1855-1930) was my 1st cousin 4x removed. I have been doing some research into him and his family.

From looking at historical newspapers and census records he owned his own studio on Bank Street, Galashiels in 1889, and 1890 based on advertisements I've found. One of the advertisements says he was an operator with Mr J Clapperton, Bridge Street. His studio on Bank Street was previously owned by a Mr Menzies.

He was born in Edinburgh to Thomas Maclagan - music hall singer, dancer and comedian and Ann Kyles.

He lived in Glasgow and is listed as a photographer on the 1881 census. In the 1891 and subsequent census records he is living at various address in Galashiels. Until 1911 and 1921 when he seems to have had quite a change of career. He is then listed as working as a "wool mill man" and 'woollen press man".

Hope this helps. I have been looking to see if any of his carte de visite are available to purchase online but sadly haven't been able to find anything. I do have a lot of information regarding his family if anyone out there is interested.

Seems No 30 John St became available May 1886 and a Mrs S Carruthers (as hubby of Simon rather than given name Elizabeth?) moved there -

Do you want Simon specifically at that address (there on 1891 Census)
