Odd Occupation
« on: Wednesday 08 May 19 12:03 BST (UK) »
While looking at 1901 Census records in Family-search, I came across this chap in Walthamstow.
William F Buxton (32) head of household, born in London, Occupation STICK MONSTER.
He was not who I was looking for but any clues as to how a stick monster makes a living?

Were you looking at the original image or just a rather amusing transcription?

I agree with avm - although both FindMyPast and FS have Stick Monster as the transcription and it is unclear.  1911 census entry for William clearly states Stick Mounter.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Question remains - what is a stick mounter?  How does one mount sticks, and what on?

A fashionable walking stick would have been mounted with a silver, or even gold, handle.
