I see from earlier threads that you have also looked in Sussex and that Elizabeth died in 1875 so would not appear on census after the births of the two younger children.

I also think it is possible they never married

Hi Nannyjan and Rosie99,

I am coming round to the probability that they were not married, but I have to satisfy myself that I have checked every angle.

As to the children, Willie James Simmons (1870) and Henry Edward Simmons (1875) are definitely both theirs.  I have posted various threads about this marriage over the years.  Elizabeth died when giving birth to Henry Edward.  They were both bought up by their grandparents.

My problem is with their father,  think his name was William.  Unfortunately, when Elizabeth died he went awol and we do not know anything about him other than his name and occupation.

Hence I am desperate to find a marriage so I can trace his line back.

Can I ask Rosie, you mentioned an Albert Edward (1872) and said his mothers maiden name was Cooley.  Can you let me know where you found this out as this is a new one to me.

Many Thanks

Sue

Could we be looking for something that did not happen?   :-\

My gt.grandparents registered the births of all ten of their children as if they were a married couple.....but they were not.

So did mine Nanny Jan,mine finally did marry when their oldest (of 10) children was 21  :o

Hi Rosie99

Thank you for that.  I normally use free BMD for my GRO searches as I didn't know you could do it on the GRO site.

FreeBMD does not give mothers maiden name until the 1900s so this birth is a new one on me.  Thank you very much for pointing that out, I am off to order the certificate.

Hi,

I did find her burial, unfortunately I did it the hard way, I didn't know they had these images on FamilySearch.

A couple of pages after Elizabeth's burial record is a record of an unknown male from Chelsea.  Family rumour says that her husband killed himself shortly after Elizabeth died but I have not been able to find a death certificate.

Can anybody tell me how I would find a death certificate on the GRO indexes of unknown people?

Many Thanks

Sue
