Births and burials - Wellington?
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 08:11 BST (UK) »
Philip Thorne and Lydia Standling married in Wellington on 11 Aug 1792. Neither had been married previously. They had at least seven children between 1793 - 1817, suggesting they married in their early 20s. Philip born 1765-70?, Lydia born 1768-1772? Locations unknown.

The baptisms of their three youngest children were delayed.
Jane born 21 Aug 1812, baptised 23 Jul 1828.
Susan born 21 Aug 1815, baptised 23 Dec 1827. (Parents of both identified as "late Philip and Lydia").
John born 26 Dec 1817, baptised 25 Jun 1837, ( "late Philip and late Lydia"). All baptisms Wellington.

This suggests that Philip died 1817-27, and Lydia died 1828-1837. However there is no certainty that they died in Wellington, nor that Lydia did not re-marry.  I have searched all freely available  on- line sources without success and would welcome any assistance in my attempt to trace the records of their births and/ or deaths.

i'm not sure if any of this will help.

Harriet CAPE to Philip THORNE   Marriage   29 Sep 1838   Somerset   Wellington : St John

The above marriage, which you may have, is on Freereg, it gives quite a bit of info.

There are 5 PT marriages at Wellington over a number of years, starting with one to Sarah Stradling in 1773 and including Philip and Lydia

Baptisms PHILIP and LYDIA as you say but no Philip but the marriage above notes his father as Philip, so there is a gap of births/baptisms 1799 - 1809.

Wellington : South Street Baptist Chapel –

Hannah THORN   Baptism   22 Aug 1793

Nathaniel THORNE   Baptism   05 Feb 1797

Elizabeth THORN   Baptism   11 Sep 1799

Wellington : St John

Mary THORNE   2 Jul 1795   Baptism   9 Jul 1809

Susan THORNE   21 Aug 1815   Baptism   23 Dec 1827

Jane THORNE   21 Aug 1812   Baptism   23 Jul 1828

John THORNE   26 Dec 1817   Baptism   25 Jun 1837

I just wonder if this could be Philip born 6 Nov 1759, father George.
Philip LAPTHORNE   Baptism   15 Jan 1762   Somerset   Wellington : St John

No luck with Lydia. There is a burial on family search 2 Oct 1825, no first name Thorne at Wellington.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi
The youngest child Susan Thorne is with the Stradling family on the 1841 census
1841 Wellington South St
James Stradling 29 baker n
Jane 28  y
Christa 0  y
Mary 64 nurse n
Lyidia 9 F.S  y
Susannah Thorne 26 weaver y

From latter censuses the Stradling family n seems to equal north Malton  Devon.
The father and mother of James born 1812 and brother George 1815 is Humphrey Stradling and Mary Harris married  4 July 1803 North Malton .His first wife was a Grace Thorne 21 Nov 1784.
Humphrey was a weaver.
He was buried at Wellington St John  15 Feb 1832 age 69.
It looks like two siblings Lydia and Humphrey Stradling marrying two siblings Phillip and Grace Thorne

Phillip Thorne was also a weaver according to the latter baptisms

There is an abstract of a will on the National Archives for a Nathaniel Stradling of Wellington 1810 ,you never know it might help.

Colin and CD. Many thanks for your comments and suggestions.

CD. I was interested in your mention of the Humphrey Stradling/Grace Thorne marriage in North Molton. I have found record of the baptism of  Grace in N M,  14 Feb 1768. The same parents also had a son, Philip, born 1764 and although he died in 1766, there must be the possibility that they had a later, unrecorded, child of the same name. It has certainly given me focus for another area of research.

There are number of Sradling events recorded in N M but there is a large concentration of events in that name recorded in Culmstock which is over the Devon border just  6 miles from Wellington.  I clearly need to cast my net more widely in my search for Lydia.

Hello
I've had a think about the Stradlings over night and done a bit more digging.
Looking for Lydia's family is tough as they are obviously Baptists and they don't believe in infant Baptism and don't leave easy to find birth records.Between 1754 and 1837 however they would have had to marry in the local church ,because Baptist Chapel weren't legally valid.
So their marriages must be in the C of E church and they would  probably have been buried there too as Baptist chapels might not have a graveyard.
Bearing that in mind i took another look at Wellington Stradlings.
After all the couple usually marry in the bride's parish

Nathaniel who made the Will  was buried 11.10.1809 at Wellington St John's ,age 81
So 1728-1809
He married Hannah Tothill 1.9.1758 wit Samuel Northam and William Stevens

He was baptised at St Johns 1.6.1729 s of Nathaniel
Nathaniel senior had married Elizabeth Giles 7 Mar 1728

Now thanks to Colin and his wonderful work we know amongst other things Phillip and Lydia's first 3 children were Hannah , Nathaniel, and Elizabeth.
Perhaps not a coincidence ?
Fingers crossed the extract of his Will could give his children.
You never know.
There is a nice website which gives the families in Wellington St John alphabetically which may also help

 www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Wellington/Transcripts/c-s3

The baptist chapel transcriptions are at

All the best

Ciderdrinker, JACKPOT!

Nathaniel left his property at Row Green, Wellington between his daughters,  Mary Pyne, Lydia Thorne, Elizabeth Pyne and Sarah Allen. Residue to his wife, Hanna.

Many, many thanks.

Now for Philip Thorne.
