In Whitley Bay Cemetery is the war grave of Leading Wren Jean Watson Moore. 

Tragically, Jean was murdered by her fiancé at some point during the late evening of 14 December 1939 and the early hours of 15 December 1939 at Cullercoats near Whitley Bay.  Her fiancé was sentenced to be executed but this was later commuted to a life sentence.  A number of people had signed a petition to save his life.
