A scotsman in China .1860.s
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 13:42 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea how to find records from China

Apparently this man left his wife a few years after marriage ..around 1862 and had a family in Shanghai

If he .d married the lady it would have been bigamous so i wonder how births were recorded

Or where his shanghai death would be recorded

If it's Charles Forsyth you are looking for he does not feature in the directories of foreign residents in China for 1863, 1867, 1874 or 1888.

Its Chsrles Forsyth
I posted a topic about his scots family on the lighter side common room forum ..
Maybe it should be on this board or on a scottish board specific to Argyll
* have asked modifiers to move it .

Thank you shaun we posted at same time ...thats very interesting .

I wonder if it was family folklore ? Adopted Descendant did inform me that family had received a letter of his death from Shanghai ...
But that could easily be a story too.

I see that online trees have a date for his death in Shanghai: 13 August 1879.

There is corroboration in the newspaper report from October 1879:

For some reason i cant open these files .
The newpaper clip is great as it confirms he was a long resident .

What a mixture of nationalities in the deaths ..I wonder if anyone is researching into their families .?
