Adam Glover marriage, wife, children
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 18:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out information about my G-G-G-Grandfather Adam Glover. His son, John Glover was born about 1836 and married Bessie Collins April 19, 1860 in Rathdrum, Wiclow, Ireland. All I have is that his father's name was Adam and I am pretty sure Adam was a police constable in Athy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Cindy

According to his marriage certificate, John’s occupation at the time of his marriage was Commercial Clerk. His address was Athy. His father was named as Adam Glover. No occupation.

The RIC records on Ancestry don’t contain any Adam Glover entries.

September 6 1841 Constable Adam Glover Ballynakill and Ballyroan again Queens County.

There was a Constable Glover in Athy in 1835 (an election)
Two cases in the Kildare Assizes 1843 and 1847 with a Constable Glover, 1843 give his as Head Constable no first name on any of these so may not be the same man or may be more that one man.

Thank you,
I have found other listings like that from Athy but can't find anything that ties him to the family. Athy is where his son John's kids are listed as being born. A long time ago someone sent me a transcript of Adam's son, John's marriage. It listed John's father as Adam Glover, Police Constable. The father of John's wife,Bessie Collins, was listed as Chief Constable.

I had another look at the marriage on a pay to view site. I see now that fathers occupations are given. They appear in the footnotes, and not on the main information section:

GROOM: 24 BRIDE: 23, GROOMS FATHERS OCC: POLICE CONSTABLE , BRIDES FATHERS OCC: HEAD CONSTABLE

Head Constable was a rank above sergeant but below Inspector. It has no equivalent today.

A useful thing to know about the RIC was that they did not allow officers to serve in the county they were born in or where they had a family connections.  So any RIC Officer serving in Athy almost certainly didn’t originate in Co. Kildare.

After 1860 Constable Glover appears in Kerry 1872 and 1873, no result after than, nothing for Adam Glover.

What was Bessie's father's name?

There was a Head Constable Collins 1858 in an inquest of a man killed by the Wicklow to Dublin train at Kinnekilly (Murrough).
After 1860 all the results for Head Constable Collins are in the Belfast Newsletter.
