Thanks Stan.  :)

Although this says that George Williams is single, as he is in the workhouse and someone else would have filled out the form, it may or may not be accurate.

Philldw, have you traced all of George's children on each census in case George appears with one of them?

Thanks for the advice about children. On the 1891 census there are 2 children. I can find a birth & marriage of Ellen ( George Richard Brimecome 1897) on the 1911 census. I cannot find then on the 1901 census. The other child Henry W Williams. Having trouble birth/marriage/ death etc on FreeBMD a bit of a mystery..so far.

David, this is Goerge's daughter Ellen I think in 1901 in Portsmouth - everyone showing as born there:

George Branscome 26 coal heaver
Ellen Branscome 24
George Branscome 1
Ann Spiers 68 widow visitor

So, no sign of father George with her.

Possible death for Ellen Brimecome, aged 53 in 1930 4th Qrt Portsmouth - vol 2b/pg 684.

There were more children weren't there for George and wife Harriet . I would link to Family Search, but they seem to have a current problem. From other indexes, in Portsea Island in 1881:

Harriett Williams 35
Emma Williams 14
Elizabeth Williams 5
Ellen Williams 3
John Williams 1

Oddly, this Harriet shows as a widow working as a charwoman?

1891, still in Portsea, and George back in the fold:

George Williams 45 Naval Pensioner
Harriet Williams 45
Ellen Williams 13
Henry W Williams 11 months

I think the word you mention under Naval Pensioner might be Cleaner? Could this fit for Harriet and connect to that 1881 entry?

You mentioned you were missing some details on son Henry. Likely birth:

Henry William Williams 3rd Qrt 1890 Portsea Island
Vol 2b/ pg 420

I think George is alive and well long past 1900. You need to verify but there is a possible remarriage for him in 1900:

George Williams and Maria Jane Matthews 2nd Qrt 1900 Portsea - one other couple on that listing

Possible for 1901 Portsea and George in the pub trade:

George Williams 56 licensed victualler
Maria J Williams 53
Harry Williams 10 son...Henry I would say
Tom Carpenter 43 boarder

You should be able to find George and wife Maria easily enough in 1911. His occupation then a further ref to Navy.

Son Henry also nearby in 1911.

Possible death for Maria Jane Williams:

Maria J Williams    74
Portsmouth 2nd Qrt 1922
Vol. 2b/ pg 610

There are a few possibilities for George post 1911 in Portsmouth. Did he have a middle initial?

I do not have a middle initial or name for George Williams. I still think the death cert in 1910 is the favourite for my man. I greatly appreciate all you guys have found out for me. David

David, if you are confident with the 1891 entry you have mentioned and shown above, the 1911 census entry with all the other info mentioned certainly points to the same man. Family Search back up for me. See 1911 entry for this George with a matching occupation to 1891 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWQM-P1T
