Daughter or Sister?
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 00:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me clarify a word in this extract from the 1630 Will of William Brinkwell of Petworth.

I'm trying to work out if the second to last word on the second line [before "Alse"] is "Daughter" or "Sister".

In the second extract I've attached the word "Sussex" is clear and the "S" looks very different to the initial letter of the word I'm stuck on. This makes me think it isn't "Sister" but it still doesn't look like Daughter [it looks like Daffer or Daugher].

Can anyone help clarify this word for me?

Many Thanks
Matt

The word is “Dafter”, which is the same as “daughter”.

I think you're right Matt to rule out the capital "S'.
I'd agree it's 'Dafter'
Most of the on-line dictionaries say:
obsolete spelling of daughter English
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Hi

Thanks to sbny357 and goldie61 for the help with that word. I had originally read it as "Daffer" and then wondered if I had got it wrong lol!

At least I now know that Alce [or Alice] was his daughter now. This fits with the details I have in other Wills so I now know where this person fits in the tree.

Thanks again

Matt
