Thanks Osprey. They’re helpful.

Evan Evans is a bit of a head scratcher though. His mother’s maiden name should be James, but I can’t find a birth record that matches or for his brother James. So was David not really his grandfather?

The plot thickens, but I’d like to tie up that loose end.

possible birth regs
Evan James march qtr 1868 Llandilofawr vol 11a pg 677  mmn -
David James sept qtr 1866 Llandilofawr vol 11a pg 670 mmn -
so boys registered before marriage of mother

Wonder if Eleanor born c. 1842 could be their mother? Census 1861 shows her as a dairy maid RG9/4130 folio 51 pg 2 with family called Evans.
She married James Davies june qtr 1870 Llandovery vol 11a pg 915 and in the 1871 census is in Talley, sister Hannah visiting RG10/5482 folio 48 pg 10

Thanks Osprey. The plot then thickens about the Evans name.

Potential mothers would be Eleanor b. 1842, Hannah b. 1845, Margaret b. 1846.  Your info on Eleanor could be right, and a birth certificate would tell me.  But another missing father!  These families make it tough!

I wonder if James Davies is a sibling of the John Davies that Mary may have married? Very common name though.  When the certificates arrive, I’ll try to start unpicking it.

Once again, thank you for your time and assistance.

I had a look for the sisters later on. Eleanor & James Davies had a son called William David, so perhaps David James not her son.
Hannah James married John Griffiths 20 Oct 1873 at Christchurch, Brynamman. 1891 the family is in Llandilofawr RG12/4512 folio 47 pg 18, Eleanor & James Davies are on the same page.

Haven't found Margaret as yet.

Osprey, got the birth certificate for Mary and it’s a match.  It will take me a while to get her marriage certificate because it has to get to me in Oz.

Yeah, I’m not sure about Eleanor being the mother of the two boys. I might have to get one of the birth certificates if we can’t find a better explanation.

Thanks again.
