My mum uses a hand-sized "table sweeper" to pick up odd bits off the carpet. It works just the same way, and saves getting the vacuum cleaner out.

Knowing that she's had it for a couple of decades, I did a quick search for replacements. Not needed yet, but eventually...

They are still available, under the same "Whizzkleen" name. Restaurants use them to sweep crumbs off tablecloths.  :)
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

My Mum’s Ewbank was made of wood, with rubber tyred  wheels.
I have a little Gtech, rechargeable .saves getting the monster Dyson out.
Very handy ,manoeuverable, for under coffee tables etc.
I think Mum’s would have been a wedding present,1933.
Gosh beating carpets with a woven cane beater ,over the washing line.
We don’t know we are born!
Viktoria.

Oh Viktoria you have described perfectly the one my mum had - see my reply #1

Got a GTECH recently too and it is excellent.

Remember my mum beating the rugs on the washing line with a wooden cane.  My sister and I loved helping as we thought it was a game  ;D

The trouble with a straight cane was it could pierce older carpets, so the beater was an improvement.
The weight of the home made peg rugs ,made from old clothes cut into strips
on a sackcloth backing, throwing that over the line !!!
Brass taps polished every morning, likewise the steel trimmings on the huge black range, that was done with emery paper or emery cloth was better.

Step stoning - what a stupid idea! It was ruined as soon as someone dared to step on it.
My Mum( yes her again)once cleaned the flight of four stone steps from her mother’s house and the flagstones , and the foot scraper and coal hole lid were blackleaded.
She was pouring the water along the gutter to wash  away the dried horse manure which in those far off days was always blowing along gutters.
My paternal grandfather to be came along and walked on her cleaned flags and shook his pipe also, she had a short fuse,so threw the water over him instead. :o
We loved that story as children, although I liked him very much.
Viktoria.
