My Mum)s first vacuum cleaner was a National,we had only one electric plug
in the house,a big round Wylex in the kitchen.
The flex did not reach to the posh room if plugged in the kitchen plug socket so the vacuum had to be plugged into the light socket! The plug on the flex on the vacuum shaped like the end of bulb.
No vacuuming on dark days so the old Ewbank was handy but seeing as we were forced to walk on our hands not much needed .
We always took our shoes off ,I still do but having lived abroad where it is unthinkable to leave them on , it is second nature.
We were always questioned when we went through to the kitchen” You have
not touched the table have you?”’ The nearest thing to God in our house it had cost the earth with a lovely cabinet and chairs.
I had it when Dad died but had to let it go when I downsized.
My Methodist days were when I was evacuated ,Mum & Dad were not church or Chapel goers but we were sent to Sunday School.
I do care for things but not to the extent that people are made miserable.
Some marks on mine are memories, like the Christmas when my second son ,all of about 46 , was having a go on his nephew’s scooter, backed into a glass cabinet shattering the glass which had to be specially cut and matched
to the original which was I think was soda glass.
The wood was damaged too, repaired but not entirely invisible.
Thank goodness for insurance!
What is the oldest thing in your house?
This topic was on a few years back and it was very interesting.
