Dutch Headstone Inscription
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to interpret a 19th century headstone inscription in dutch. The only problem is they used abbreviations. The part I am trying to interpret reads " Ovrel. Op. Zer. Den 8 Oct 1831"

Anyone had any experience with such abbreviations?
many thanks
John

Definitely Ovrel Op der , and not Overl op der (which I would read as "deceased on the date")
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Hi Pauline,

Its definitely Ovrel but this may have been mis-engraved as your words make a great deal of sense. Thank you.

Overleden is dead, there is no word that could be shortened to ovrel,
so a mistake as has been suggested.
