Owen Clarke Matilde Ross
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 17:51 BST (UK) »
Owen and Matilda are originally from Cavan Ireland. They came over to Motherwell in 1901 and got married on 20th December that year. I am having trouble reading where this took place.I thought it might be R C church Motherwell. Can anyone help with this. Also Owen's occupation is dross washer. Would anyone know what/where ?. Thank you

Hi Tracey

Can you add a snippet from the marriage cert to show where the marriage took place so that people can try to help?

Was Owen working in the mining industry? I think a dross washer was a machine used so maybe an operator would be called a dross washer I would imagine. Maybe his children's birth certs would given you further info re his occupation.

Tracey, the image you are seeing online on SP is the marriage certificate from the statutory registers. If you can manage to just add a clip from that image, that is what we need to see to work with you on what it says.

In 1901 there was only one R.C. church in Motherwell, it was called Our Lady of Good Aid.
It was just newly built at that time, completed in 1900 I think. After 1947 it became the cathedral of the newly-formed diocese of Motherwell, which was formed from the arch-diocese of Glasgow, the new diocese included most of the old county of Lanarkshire.
Here is the link -

Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Thank you. If I have managed to attach it you will be able to see my dilemma.  Sorry if it's gone wrong.
