Clones Parish Records, Diocese of Clogher
« on: Monday 13 May 19 17:16 BST (UK) »
Can someone please advise this Canadian lady who is going around in circles, does the area of Tullygony, Rafeenan and Drumcoo (Jackson) fall under the Diocese of Clogher? I have googled but I'm getting myself so mixed up and going in circles. I found the baptism, marriage and death records for Clones Parish which was amazing however I am confused on the area. I found one birth record that could be my ancestor back in 1801 but at the time the parents were from Magherarney. Then of course they could have come from Scotland, settled in Co. Monaghan, but ahhhhhhh!!!!! Excuse my daftness.

Thank you!!

There are a lot of Catholic parishes in a diocese, and the records at nli.ie are divided into parishes.

I think what you need to ask is what parish Tullygony, Rafeenan, and Drumgoo (Jackson) are in, not diocese.

The answer is harder to come up with. I didn't find Drumgoo (didn't look very hard) but Tullygony and Rafeenan are in the Civil parish of Tydavnet. There is a Catholic parish of Tydavnet as well, but the parish lines don't always match from civil to Catholic.

The map at nli.ie of Tydavnet Catholic parish is here, as you probably have found.
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0319

this site locates the Townlands, here is Tullygony
https://www.townlands.ie/en/monaghan/monaghan/tehallan/tehallan/tullygony/

You might have to work it out on your own, compare maps, and decide.

That is my uninformed answer, it's not just you, it drives me crazy also. Someone with more knowledge of the area or Irish Catholic records will hopefully come along and clear it up for both of us.

Use the link on the bottom of the NLI parish page to Irish Ancestors https://www.johngrenham.com/records/rc_church.php?churchid=0319&parish=Tydavnet
Than use the link Click here for a listing of placenames in this parish
and it brings you to the Civil parish, click on that to get the list of townlands
https://www.johngrenham.com/c_parish/c_parish_main.php?civilparishid=1970&county=&civilparish=Tedavnet

If you want to see the Dioceses just click on the little map on the parish page on NLI changing it to Show Dioceses or Show Counties.

Back to Irish Ancestors use the link to Placenames at the top of the page and using hallmark's spelling, you as such do the same thing in reverse and end up here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0297

Is this regarding the Graham family you asked about here?
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=812666.0

In that thread you mentioned a marriage registration in 1842 that gave the townlands of both Thomas Graham and Elizabeth Martin. Was it a civil registration?

Do you know what religion they were? Civil reg of Catholic marriages didn't start until c 1865. If they were not Catholic, you won't find them at nli.ie.
