Martha Jane Williams/Evans/Richards Haverfordwest
« on: Monday 13 May 19 17:18 BST (UK) »
Questions: Was Martha Jane Evans born out of wedlock? Was Martha Jane Williams previously married to an Evans? Was the maiden name of Martha Jane Williams actually Richards?

Taken from the war records:
John Williams died 1917: Mother Martha Jane Williams (Evans); Father Thomas Williams Deceased, of 19, Market Street, Haverfordwest.
Brother(s) Thomas Williams address not known assumed Aberdare
Sister(s) Martha Jane Evans (26), Violet May Williams (13), Florence Edith (7)
19 Market Street.
That suggested her maiden name was Evans, with Martha Jane being born before marrying my great-grandfather.

Marriage: Thomas Williams . 8 Sep 1894 . Haverfordwest
Thomas Williams Died: Feb 1916

On the Census 1901 it names her sister as Agnes Richards, who at 16 may have been married, but information lower could suggest she was single.
Furzy Park And Portfield Haverfordwest . Albert Town
Thomas Williams . Head . Male . 30 . Laugharne (great-grandfather)
Martha Williams . Wife . Female . 29 . Walton West, Pembrokeshire
Martha Williams . Daughter . Female . 7 . Haverfordwest
Thomas Williams . Son . Male . 6 . Haverfordwest (grandfather)
John Williams . Son . Male . 4 . Haverfordwest
Agnes Richards . Wife's Sister . F . 16 . Haverfordwest

Martha Jane Evans (26) was born c.1891
I can find no marriage of Martha Richards to an Evans 1880 to 1891 in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire or Cardiganshire.
John Williams 1896
Thomas Williams 1897
Violet May Williams (13) c.1905
Florence Edith (7) c.1910

Thomas Williams Head and John Howell Williams were brothers.
Marriage: Florence Richards to John (Howell) Williams
17 Jul 1897 at Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Florence: 22 John Williams: 21

Were Martha, Florence and Agnes sisters?

Looking on FamilySearch I can find census information for both families.
John Howell Williams and Florence did not have children, but in the 1911 census Mary Brown of Laugharne was there and referred to as niece. That link connects my family between Laugharne and Haverfordwest.

Just to say birth for Agnes Richards Mar 1885 Haverfordwest has mothers maiden name Langhorne.

Martha Jane Richards Sep 1870 Haverfordwest has Laugharn.

Can't find a Florence but there is an Alice Mary Mar 1875 mothers name Langharn.
1875 would be the right year if Flo married age 22 in 1897.

Thanks Osprey and Milliepede, This is getting more complicated. I am sure the families are right, in being on my family who had close links between Haverfordwest and Laugharne where most lived. From Laugharne I have plenty of information, but this part of the family I am struggling with. Thomas Williams was born in Laugharne, so I have accepted similar as corruptions, in being out of county and the recorder not knowing how it was spelt.

I cannot fathom why Martha Jane and her daughter also Martha Jane were referred to as Evans when at the time she was married as a Williams and the other children are named Williams. It makes more sense for her maiden name to be Richards. Written in the war document, it is not a single ‘mistake’ in being repeated, but the other children are Williams.

This listing I have: Thomas Williams sept qtr 1894 vol 11a pg 1121 mmn Richards. And married at Walwyn's Castle. I did not find: Baptism 19 July 1893 St Thomas, Haverfordwest for Martha Jane Margaret Elizabeth Williams daughter of Thomas, fish dealer, & Martha Jane of Furzy Park. That makes sense as for a time they lived at Furzy Park, Portfield and he was a fish dealer. But that does not make her his child, as I feel she was born in 1890. It does though explain why she was a Williams on later census records.

I keep finding possible family members in Walwyn’s Castle and Walton West areas which are quite close.
I also found the possible parents and links to the railway/porter, but with only the basics so did not want to commit. What I did not have was: John Williams 21 Fisherman Laugharne, father Thomas, sailor (accurate); Florence Richards 21 Redberth, father Thomas, porter; witnesses Phoebe Lloys & George Ormond.
Redberth places her near to Narberth, which I have also seen, and does not really link to others in Haverfordwest, but she could have been in service as there are plenty of large houses there. John was John Howell and known as Howell who went on to farm. Haverfordwest is probably the same distance from Redberth as it is from Walton West.
