Bere Ferrers - LASKEY & COWBRIDGE c.1667
« on: Tuesday 14 May 19 03:12 BST (UK) »
Hello kind people,

I have an ancestor from Cornwall by the name of Malachi LASKEY. Malachi was born at Moretonhampstead in Devon in 1642. His wife's name is Wilmot. Some family trees have her surname as COWBRIDGE.

I cannot find a record of the marriage in Cornwall but an online ancestry tree suggests that the marriage took place in Bere Ferrers in 1667.

I would appreciate a lookup to confirm this information.

Thanks.

Thank you Peter,

It is the marriage that I am primarily interested in at this stage although I do need to confirm the names of his children. The name Malachi has been passed down through the generations but I have gaps in some of the earlier information which I am trying to fill.

Apart from the mention to Bere Ferris on the online tree I also have a DNA link to a family from Bere Ferris which I would like to be able to connect back to the Laskey family.

The Cornish branch of the Laskey family starts when Malachi Laskey moved there after his marriage. He was the vicar at Stithians. Cowbridge does not seem like a common surname and I would like to confirm whether this surname is correct and where it originated from.

Checking the Cornwall OPC site, there are 16 marriages recorded against the Parish of Beer Ferris. The earliest is Robert Helland and Elizabeth Rider , 22 ? 1667.
Looking at the original images on FindMyPast the Helland/Rider marriage is on the same page as the Lassker/Cowbridge marriage (3 entries earlier).
I wonder why the Lassker/Cowbridge (and others on the same page) do not feature on OPC. The OPC site does not identify the source of the Helland/Rider info.

Thank you for looking. I use the OPC site a lot but I didn't realise it had Devon Records. I will check out the entry when I next visit my local library.

I suspect the Devon records are included where one of the parties is from a Cornish parish and the other from a Devon Parish?

Note - having re-checked the OPC, I note the auto fill process for parish returns "Beer Ferris, Devon" - the significance of which escaped me completely first time around!!

I've been researching my Bice family tree for many years now, and I was excited today to work out that my Nicholas Bice(from St Enoder) might have married Grace Lasky from Stithians.

I haven't been able to find their marriage, although from the transcriptions it looks as though the source material from Stithians isn't in good condition.

Their first son, Luke was baptised in Stithians in 1687, which is what led me wonder whether his mother was from Stithians.  (Their remaining family, including a son named Malachy, were baptised in St Enoder.)

Luke 1687-1750
Patience 1688-1688
Patience 1689
Nicholas 1692
John 1695
Grace 1698
Malachy 1701-1763
Ann 1702
James 1705-1751
Edward 1707-1766
Solomon 1709-1767

The fact that there was a baptism for a Grace, of a suitable age, in Stithians, with a father who was named Malachy is what leads me to believe that this is quite possibly Grace Lask(e)y who married Nicholas Bice.

I'm so glad that I've found this thread, as you've also answered my query about the marriage of Grace's parents.  :)
