Is this my Mary in 1871?
« on: Tuesday 14 May 19 18:04 BST (UK) »
Mary Ann Rhodes was born around 1855 in Bolehall in Warwickshire. After the death of her father in 1868, Mary and her sister both left the family home by 1871 and I'm assuming they may have gone into domestic service. Her sister ended up in Gloucestershire but as for Mary... I'm not too sure. I know she was back with her family by 1880 as she was married at Tamworth.

There is a Mary Ann Rhodes, born about 1850 in Coleshill in Warwickshire, working as a housemaid at Blenheim in 1871. This Mary is a little older than Mary would have been but I can't find any other possibilities. I've checked the image and it definitely says Coleshill but could Coleshill be a clerical error? Should it actually be Bolehall?

Would Aston have been the Registration district for Coleshill?

Hi,

I think they might be different Marys.  I can see these two families in 1861,

This is the Mary born Bolehall, which was in Tamworth Registration District,

Mary Ann    RHODES    Dec Q 1855    Tamworth Union    6b  263
mmn:  SILVESTER

1861  RG9/1969  f.10  p.13  Wigginton, Staffordshire    Registration district:  Tamworth

RHODES
John           Head    38    Sawyer                        Forton Stafford
Mary            Wife    37                                        Wigginton Stafford
Thomas      Son    15    Learning Bricklaying     Bolehall Warwick
Hannah      Daur    11    Scholar                         Bolehall Warwick
John           Son      7          Scholar                    Bolehall Warwick
Mary Ann   Daur     5    Scholar                          Bolehall Warwick

(Mary is transcribed as 3 but i think it looks like 5 on the image)

I can't find this one in the GRO but I have found her here,

Gro Regimental Birth Indices (1761 To 1924)
British Armed Forces And Overseas Births And Baptisms

Mary A RHODES
Birth year:  1849
Place:  Newport (Monmouthshire)
Regiment:  14th Foot
Type:  Armed Forces
Country:  Wales
Page:  24
Volume:  7
Line number:  63

1861  RG9/2188; Folio: 71; Page: 21  Coleshill,  Warwickshire    Registration district:  Meriden
High St

RHODES
William      Head    50    Army Private         Warwicksh Coleshill
                                      Chelsea Out Pensioner 14th Regt
Ellen           Wife    43    Dressmaker        Ireland
Henry            Son   23    Ag Lab                Wales Brecon
Mary Ann    Daur    12    Scholar               Wales Newport
John             Son     9    Scholar                Ireland
Fanny         Daur     8          "                      Ireland
Ellen           Daur     5           "                     Warwicksh Coleshill

I think that in 1871 they both give the 1861 address place as their place of birth,

1871  RG10/3685   f.124  p.23  Timperley, Cheshire
Woodlands Park

Mariame RHODES    Serv    15    General Servant    Staffordshire Tamworth

Living in the household of Hellen E W VENONE?

(this is the Ancestry transcription, FindMyPast has Marianne and Helen E H VENOUR)

I think the one you have found in Blenheim is the Mary Ann born in Newport, living in Coleshill in 1861,

1871  RG10/1449  f.60  p.19  Blenheim, Oxfordshire
Blenheim Palace

Mary Ann RHODES    Serv    21    Servant Housemaid     Warwick Coleshill

Living in the household of John WATSON.

The Mary Ann born 1852 in Aston seems to be with her parents Abraham and Mary in 1861 and 1871.

Hope this helps :)

Regards,
Daisy
