Rothiemay
« on: Wednesday 15 May 19 01:48 BST (UK) »
According to the ( IGI ) FamilySearch, They are showing that a John Innes married Janet Innes on the 4 Sep.1659 in Rothiemay. I checked with ScotlandsPeople for the year of 1659 concerning John Innes and Janet Innes but they had nothing. I then expanded my search from 1658 to 1660 and 1658 came up but in Banff and not Rothiemay, both in Banffshire.

Have I missed something here? Scotlands People say no but the IGI says yes.

I need help.

Could it be banns in both places. This happens when one party is from one parish and the other from another.  FS has recorded one and SP, the other  :-\

Also, the FS one might be from  a patron submission rather than one of their extracted records. The patron submissions are just that - what anyone has submitted - and are often wrong.

I'd go with the SP one as these are from the actual records. Have you looked at  the image of the original entry on there?

I'm not sure why you've linked to Genuki,  Colin  :-\

From SP:

Quote
INNES JOHNE JANET INNES/FR899 (FR899) 04/09/1659 165/30 377 Rothiemay

From FS:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTLS-6Y5

Both recorded same place, same time . You must have not searched SP correctly.  What did you search on?

Added - I just put in John Innes and 1659

Hi Gadget, the link to GENUKI gave some additional information on Rothiemay, which Dufftown might find useful.

I think the real problem was the search parameters used rather than knowledge of Banffshire. I found the entries very easily - See Reply #3

Added - it's usually best to put in a minimum of info in searches of this kind.

I re-tried with ScotlandsPeople for the year of marriage for John and Janet Innes. This time I looked for Janet Innes and the years only and I did get an extract. I also tried for John using the year only but no success.
Here are two extracts and need your help understing why so short an extract.

It was fairly usual in those days to just make a short entry - just the names and date.   Have you compared the entry with others on the page. Marriage wasn't a religious sacrament in Scotland, as it was in England.

Hi Gadget. When I got this extract this was the only one as a one liner all the others had at least an explanation with witnesses. I thought that this was the normal for this.

You mentioned that perhaps Janet was from Rothiemay and John from another parish but I cannot find anything on John
