Papers past has various mentions of the name in association with Mangonui, but in particular Oliver Nicholson born in Mangonui in 1864.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD19320418.2.111?query=William%20Nicholson.%20Mangonui%20&snippet=true

His birth is on the register

1864/7603   Nicholson   Oliver   Emma   William

Other births with same parents names are

1858/4088   Nicholson   Emma

1866/10648   Nicholson   Alfred
1867/110   Nicholson   Alfred

1871/14892   Nicholson   Amelia

1873/21509   Nicholson   Alice

Sketch in Truth of Oliver

I do hope he is related to you, there are a lot of photographs including one with an HRH at the races.

Reference to William Nicholson of Pitt Street, previously running a general store at Mangonui

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH18781112.2.19?query=Nicholson%20mangonui%20&start_date=01-01-1839&end_date=31-12-1880&snippet=true

There are several marriages of the children of William Nicholson of Pitt Street, and those names do not exactly  match the names I previously posted.  There may be more than one William Nicholson.

The Pitt Street one died in 1882

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH18820810.2.20?query=William%20Nicholson&phrase=2&start_date=01-01-1839&end_date=31-12-1900&snippet=true

thanks mate
i wouldnt think that there would be to many nicholsons up in Mangonui at tht time
i know that the house he built still stands,
but there was a building where he would have worked has been replaced by the one one standing as the old court house,,which is where the customs and bond store was
and according to my late father  this nicholson was a cuctoms man, whom my gt gd father visited when sailing from alk to port waikato,,,oh,,he did lose a few ships too..

but the info gives some more to look at..more certs to order

If that’s the case, (and not just your father picking up on the surname). Then The Pitt Street William seems more likely to be your man.

Marriage of Oliver to Frances Tinning in 1888

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/AS18890104.2.35?query=Tinning%20Nicholson%20&snippet=true

There is a tree on Ancestry with this family
Says William married to Emma Fish
William born 1817 Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex

A separate tree has parents of William as George Nicholson and Lucy Elmore
With son John who married Hannah Davis as in other thread.  Interestingly that tree is unable to account for John’s son John
