1686 Bond Attachment!

Hi,
I failed to attach the image of part of the bond in my previous posting. I would like to identify the  parties and intent of this old Bond.

Date 4th Oct 1686

English paragraph

The Condition of this obligation Is Such that if the above bounden
Elizabeth Williams  her heires executors Administrators & assignes
or Sume or one of them doe and shall well and truely pay or
Cause to be payd unto the above named William Prytherch or unto
his Certaine Attorney his executors Administrators or assignes
the whole full and just Sume of ffieffty pounds with the
Lawfull use or interest thereof all of Current money of England
in one whole Sume & entire paym(en)t In att or upon the Nine and
twentieth day of Septemeber next ensueing after the day of the
date of these p(re)sents without any further delay that then
this p(re)sent obligation to be voyd and of noe effect or else
the same to be and remaine in full force power effect and
vertue in the Law

Interestingly she seems to have signed it. A different hand than whoever wrote out the bond.

You have chopped off the witnesses names - if there were any.

I see the Latin bit gives her place of residence - 'Merthir Kynog' in the county of Brecon, and she is a widow (vidua).
Thomas Vaughan and John Pugh are also mentioned - I shall leave it to the Latin experts to say what they are - I would presume 'bondsmen' with Elizabeth.

William Prytherch is of 'Gwenthor'(?)

My sincere gratitude for your deciphering. I am very confused as to what the bond entails.. Elizabeth Williams has presumably borrowed money (50 pounds) from William Prytherch that has to be paid in full by the 29th of September next in order to nullify the bond .. otherwise it remains in force..

There was probably a transaction of property of some sort.. Does the previous paragraph shed any light on why the bond was made... And who were the guarantors of the bond? Elizabeth, Vaughan, Thomas John Pugh?

I can't read all the Latin, so I wouldn't like to say if there's any more information in it.


I have several of these, and they are tantalisingly vague!
I think it's a pretty common for of document for the payment of an amount of money.

Let's hope a Latin expert can tell you more.

There's no evidence property was involved.  As I read it, Elizabeth has borrowed fifty pounds from William.  The bond is to ensure she pays it all back, with interest, at the agreed time.

The penalty - found in the Latin part - is one hundred pounds.

As Thomas Vaughan and Thomas John Pugh are also bound in that amount of 100 pounds, they are liable to pay the penalty should Elizabeth not repay the fifty pounds (and interest) or pay the penalty herself.  So they are guarantors in that sense.

Your replies are very helpful, and I send my gratitude once more for your generosity and I salute your expertise in deciphering this document.
I am researching Thomas John Pugh, who was a dissenter in Breconshire, and might be an ancestor. Possibly Elizabeth Williams too...
His brother Richard Thomas Pugh was a dissenter who was fined 20 pounds in 1860 for preaching at a "Dissenter Conventicle" in nearby Crickardarn. He paid the fine!
Richard left all of his property in Merthyr Cynog to Thomas John Pugh's son in 1706.
Is there anything in the preamble to the document that would indicate a connection/relationship between the guarantors and Elizabeth Williams?
50 pounds was a hefty amount in those days, and while Thomas John Pugh wasn't poor, he wasn't very wealthy either.
The three of them were obviously in some business enterprise together (maybe property in Merthyr Cynog?).
Thomas John Pugh described himself as an architect elsewhere, perhaps he was going to design and build a mansion for Elizabeth Williams.

To the first, I'm afraid the answer is no.  One wouldn't expect that kind of extra information in a bond, unless it were directly relevant to the reason for the bond.

TJP Is described as architect here too.  In the Latin section, the fourth word of the fourth line is architectus:

...et Thomae John Pugh de eadem p(ar)ochia in com(itatu) p(re)dicto architectus...

...and Thomas John Pugh of the same parish in the county aforesaid architect...

Hello everyone!

Many thanks for a very comprehensive interpretation of this obscure bond!
I must say that the handwriting, though impeccable, is very difficult to read.
It was all done with a quill pen by a lawyer for clients who lived in a remote village in part of the Eppynt mountains of Breconshire..
I expect people will be unable to write at all in a few years (they will probably be using their thumbnails on a blank screen)
I am very impressed with the sophistication of some of the people in those days!
