Frances Fletcher, b c 1787/90 (Compton Dundon?)
« on: Friday 17 May 19 10:10 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the birth/ baptism  and parentage of Frances Fletcher.

On 10 Oct 1814 she married Henry Bowles in Compton Dundon. Henry died in 1819 and  on 11 Oct 1825, as Frances Bowles, she married  William Edgar, also at Compton Dundon. She was buried at Compton Dundon on 5 Aug 1869, her recorded age of 82.

In 1841 she was in the same household as Joseph Fletcher, aged 77. There are conjectural  indicators that she may have been the daughter of Joseph Fletcher and Ann Syms. 1851/1861 census suggest Frances born 1788/9.

Any help to clarify her origins will be most welcome.

Baptisms;
St Andrew, Compton Dundon
JOSEPH Flatcher 27 May 1787
JAMES Flatcher 23 Nov 1788
JOHN Fletcher 4 Mar 1798
Parents JOSEPH/ANN

So plenty of room for her to fit in there.

Henry/Frances named children
ANN    13 Nov 1814
WILLIAM 26 Jan 1817
MARY ANN 26 Jan 1817

Henry was 26 when he died (c 1793) so if born c 1788/9 Frances was a little older.

William/Frances Bapt;
JAMES 04 Dec 1825
JOHN 24 Jun 1827
CHARLES 29 Mar 1829
WILLIAM 28 Apr 1830
GEORGE 28 Apr 1833

Frances did name a Daug Ann but no Joseph that I can see from either Marriage.

Sorry nothing on line that I can see for a Bapt for Frances.

All above on FreeREG

Thanks, Trish. I have most of that.

Subject to all the normal caveats and reservations, it looks as if Mary Ann Bowles (1817) was a witness at the marriage of Catherine Fletcher in 1839. Catherine was the daughter of Joseph Fletcher (1787). If  Frances was sister to Joseph, the girls would have been first cousins.

It looks pretty likely to me that Joseph 1787 and Frances were siblings given that Joseph Fletcher snr is with the Edgars in 1841 Census and the Marriage info you mention.

Trish :)

Thanks, Trish, for your continued interest.

I had hoped a third record might emerge that would confirm/substantiate the inferences of the other two but it looks as if I am as close as I'm going to get.
