US army enlistments 1870s
« on: Friday 17 May 19 19:13 BST (UK) »
I have two records of a possible 3rd cousin's death in 1873. He is recorded as enlisting (2nd Artillery) in 1873 and dying in 1876.

Are there any online records of enlistment into US Army at that time?

I have all the family details, etc. and I just want to find further confirmation that it is him.

Thanks.

Gadget,

Probably the best resource is Fold3.com

Looks as though there is a free 7-day trial that you could use to get your answer.

Thanks for that, Bryce.

I usually miss the Fold3 freebies.

You can check what the various databases are on Fold3 without signing up here - https://www.fold3.com/documents/

With those free trials, you typically have to cancel before the end of the trial or else they charge you, so they can be a pain if you forget.

Thanks, Shelly.

One of the records that I've got  is from The Register of Hospital Stewards. It's interesting as he's listed as 'died from gunshot wounds (homicide). The other one just omitted the homicide!

I have now found  evidence from more searches that this one was born in a different state and a few years earlier than my cousin, so I will have to cross this one off my possibles list.

I'll have to do some more searches for him post 1870 census.

Thanks for all the advice/links.
