William Crumpler & Elizabeth Raiford
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 12:05 BST (UK) »
William Crumpler b.1670 Isle of Wight, Virginia, USA married in 1694 to Elizabeth Raiford b.1674 Isle of Wight, Virginia, USA.

Source 1 says William Crumpler was the son of William Crumpler b.1659 in Winterborne Kingston, Blandford, Dorset, England who emigrated to Virginia, USA in 1714 and died in 1750. Considering the birth dates, not possible.

Source 2 says William Crumpler is the son of John Crumpler b.1590 and Julian Squibbe. John Crumpler b.1590 died in Winterborne Kingston, Blandford, Dorset in 1660, so therefore couldn't have a child in 1670.

Source 3 says William Crumpler is the son of John Crumpler b.c.1645 and Christian Joyce, who had eight children, seven of which were born in Almer, Blandford, Dorset. The first was born in Morden, Wareham, Dorset. So it's not likely that they had a child in Virginia, USA.

Does anybody know who the parents of William Crumpler b.1670 Isle of Wight, Virginia, USA are, and has a viable connection to them.??

Thank you in advance.

I haven't a clue, but here's Source 4 :)
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/63654412/william-crumpler
which says he is the son of a William Crumpler, b 1640, Dorset, d 1727 Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

At least the numbers work.

Thank you oldohiohome :)

Source 4 would be great if there was a William Crumpler born in 1640... but there isn't. His 'parents' married in 1639, and their first child, a stillborn daughter, arrived in 1642. Then they had a son John in 1645. Not a William in sight...  :(

@Genealiza, I have, thank you. That's where I got source 2 from.

I totally agree that Captain William Crumpler b.1659 is the son of John and Dorothy Crumpler, but he's not the father of William Crumpler b.1670 in Virginia, USA, and so far all the published family trees and online information pertaining to him (William b.1670) doesn't add up.

Are you working backward from the William Crumpler that you are sure of? If so, the obvious questions are:
What men named Crumpler were in the area in 1670?

What were William's children's names, and did the people there have a naming pattern?

Did anyone leave him anything in a will?

Was he involved in any land transactions? Did he give up rights to land to someone else?

Did he live next to someone older named Crumpler?

etc.

While gathering the links below, (Googled "Isle of Wight genealogy") I noticed marriage and death records but a lack of mention of birth records. Didn't they keep any in Isle of Wight County?

And here is something I found on ancestry.com, from a book of abstracts of wills from IOG County.  There were other Crumplers mentioned, but this seemed the best one for now. The book itself is probably available at a real good genealogy society library or one local to Isle of Wight. I think the page number was the transcribers reference to the original will book.

Other than that, I am lost or over my head. I waded through some early NE records for my wife's family, but haven't worked with anything in VA at all.

Thank you @oldohiohome, I am working from the first American Crumpler I am certain of, who was born in 1670 and trying to find a connection to the English Crumpler's I am certain of. There are so many theories as to the American Crumpler's parentage, but none make any sense date- or location-wise. There was an English William Crumpler who died in Isle of Wight, Virginia in 1727, Captain William Crumpler who was born in 1659, but he didn't arrive in America until 1714, and obviously, from birth dates, is not the father of the first American Crumpler, as is stated on many public trees and genealogy blogs. As to the offspring of our first American Crumpler, that is another point of contention, the whole mess of theories and lack of records and guess-timates doesn't even out until the late 1700's, and is a bit of a fog. As yet I've found no wills.

Thank you for the links below, I shall dissect them and try to glean as much information as possible from them and see where I go from there. :)

Hello
My research suggests that William Crumpler was indeed he who was born in 1659 in Winterborne Kingston, Dorset, England.
I have never found evidence concerning the existence of a William Crumpler Born 1670 and died 1727 ( including a visit to St Lukes Church itself where he was alleged to have been buried - no marked graves before 1767).
Further, It is my belief that he married Elizabeth KInchen , sister of Philip Raiford's wife Sarah, and did not therefore marry Elizabeth Raiford. This still ( albeit loosely)qualifies William Crumpler as his brother-in-law.
