Michael (J) Tierney - Liverpool

Hi Everyone on Roots Chat,

Over the years I have a lot of help assistance from members on this forum and you have all helped I one way or another.


I have come to somewhat of a dead end ? not unusual.  I am looking at more help on an ancestor,


Michael (J) Tierney DOB: 1847-1851? Born Liverpool Trade in 1881 Butcher.  I am finding it very difficult to find his date of death, some of the documents I have found seem to indicate 1916 if this was the case could have died serving in the GREAT WAR.

If I have repeated myself i sincerely appologise.  I wish to order his death cert.


I believe his son was Joseph (J) Tierney DOB: 1869 Born Liverpool

There was a Michael born 1851 in Marylebone Mother's Maiden Name = Murphy
          and a Michael born 1851 in St. Pancras Mother's Maiden Name = Hooper
      and a Michael Thomas born 1850 in Bermondsey Mother's Maiden Name = Connell

Thanks for your update.  Over the years I have got nowhere with the Irish side of my family tree.  It is a haze of no evidence of who they were.  A haze of thick fog.

I think in 1881 it was an enumerator mistake with Michael's birthplace. All other census returns say both he and his wife Margaret were born in Ireland

Marriage of Michael Joseph TEENEY to Margaret Elizabeth GRATTAN at St Michael's Toxteth Park on 3 October 1867.  He batchelor age 20 occ Butcher address Park St, father Thomas TEENEY occ Butcher.  She spinster age 20 address Park St daughter of George GRATTAN occ Plasterer.  Michael Joseph signed as TEENEY.

Their son born 1869 was Joseph Thomas not Joseph J and his birth registered in Liverpool March qtr 1869 as TEENEY mmn GRATTON.  George TEENEY registered March qtr 1872 mmn GRATTAN and Margaret Ellen TIERNEY mmn GRATTAN registered Dec qtr 1874 West Derby & Toxteth Park.

In 1871 the family are living at 14 Mount Vernon View, West Derby but Michael is recorded as Joseph TEENEY age 24 occupation Butcher, plus Margaret age 24 and Joseph Thomas age 2

I think he is with parents Thomas and Ellen and siblings in 1861 all born Ireland and in 1891 he is a widower living with Joseph, George and Margaret and he is recorded as born Ireland.

In 1901 census Michael J is a widower occ Butcher and Mary TIERNEY single age 55  is his housekeeper, both born Ireland.  I think this is his sister Mary.

In 1911 Mary TIERNEY born c1844 is Head living in Poole St with her niece Margaret LANGHORNE and her 2 children...Margaret is Margaret Ellen TIERNEY daughter of Michael J TIERNEY and she  married Thomas B LANGHORNE in 1897.

The good news is Mary TIERNEY gives her place of birth as County Galway so I think it's safe to say that is where Michael J TIERNEY was born.
