Mary Hetherington Photograph Restoration & Opinion
« on: Sunday 19 May 19 03:50 BST (UK) »
Good Morning

I have been researching a Hetherington line in Gateshead Co.Durham and have come into possession of 2 photographs that I think may be the same person

The younger photograph is confirmed as being Mary Hetherington b.1893 d.1920 and the Nurse photograph I suspect also Mary.

Unfortunately both photographs are not in the best condition and I cannot get them any better for posting than I have. The originals (I only have a copy sent via email and they are 1.6mb in total size).

Mary has a sad family life story with illegitimacy coupled with staunch Methodist beliefs. She would have had a very different life today!!

Any opinion on whether the 2 photographs are the same person will be most welcome.

Thank you.

Regards

Chris

If she died in in 1920 that would make 27 at the latest in the 2nd. photo.
That woman looks in her 50's.
The 1st. photo doesn't look right for someone born 1893.
She looks 18-20 & women didn't dress like this by that time.
This one looks around 1904-08.
How was it confirmed as being her?

I thought the first looked late Edwardian and the girl looked to be about 17-18. Could the lady in the second photo be her Mother?

Before reading Jim's and Carol's replies, I didn't think these two photos were of the same woman.

Although the image is not very clear, the nurse appears to have a broader nose and rounder face than the young woman. Even taking into account any weight gain as she aged I don't think her face shape is the same as the young woman. The young girl has a rosebud mouth and the older woman a wider mouth - unsure if she has teeth or not. The chins of both women seem fairly long though.  :-\

Thank you all for your replies.

A bit of background on Mary Hetherington b.1893. Mary had 3 children out of wedlock 1 son b.1916 twins b.1920 - Mary died in childbirth. The family were staunch Methodists and Mary's life was not particularly good. Handed down the family is the only known photo of Mary and that is of the younger lady - it is only family word that confirms it is Mary.

Of the twins Muriel Hetherington b.1920 went on to be a Nurse however Mary was a Nurse also hence a bit of uncertainty.

I didn't notice initially but the photo of the known younger Mary was taken by Leo Legge & Co, 12 Grainger St, Newcastle Upon Tyne. I have been able to see that Leo was a known photographer and have seen a number examples of his work c.1915.

I have photos of Mary's parents presumably also taken by Leo Legge & Co but there is no notation on them.

A composite of these photos is attached.

Regards

Chris

I agree with Ruskie.
I can't see nurse's feet. Was skirt floor-length?

I agree with Jim - the second photo is of a woman much too old to be one who died at 27 years of age.
