Where is this castle? From a Lancashire family's album, 1800s
« on: Sunday 19 May 19 09:14 BST (UK) »
This photograph (no date sorry) is captioned "Conway Castle". Having looked online however, I'm fairly sure it is not Castle Conway in Wales, or the Conway Castle in Ireland. I imagine there are towers like this all over the UK so am not hopeful for an answer, but thought I would ask.

The family who own the album moved a lot as the husband was a travelling salesman from around 1860-1910, and they lived in Lancashire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Cheshire and Glamorganshire. Not very helpful...

Thank you!

Looks a little like Peveril castle in the peak district but with less windows..

There seem to be quite a lot of towers similar to this in COUNTY Galway, maybe it's one of these that the writing is referring to.

A Border tower-house or Peel?

That was my first thought as well.

It reminds me of Bunratty Castle in Ireland.

There are hundreds of Tower houses in this country so identifying one is difficult as they were

all roughly the same.  This is not the one you want to be identified but shows the similarity.

I just wonder if this is an early photo of Dolwyddelan Castle(approx. 20 miles from Conway). It was, apparently,"extensively restored in the mid 19th century".
