William Casson and family, Marion Illinois.
« on: Monday 20 May 19 13:12 BST (UK) »
This is a spillover question from the Lancashire, England section, as these ancestors emigrated from Lancashire probably in 1863, to eventually settle in Centralia township, Marion, Illinois.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=811330.0

The likely reason for emigration was the so-called Lancashire Cotton Famine of the 1860's, and the records for a William Casson who is possibly the same person in the USA show his occupation as Machinist.

The family are on the 1861 England census living in Manchester, England.  William Casson, his daughters Elizabeth and Hannah (by my ancestor Sarah Greenwood, his first wife), and their stepmother Margaret, variously spelt in records. I am especially interested in finding out what happened to Elizabeth and Hannah.  Hannah's name could have been written in US records as Anna and on one possibly mistranscribed as Alice.

These are the US records I could find that may be the right person.

I found some records that could be William Casson's family, on familysearch.org

US Naturalization Index New England has William Casson, address Hartford, Connecticut, born Great Britain, date of naturalization March 16th 1866.

New York Passenger Lists 1820-1891 has William Casson born 1827 England, immigration 1863, New York City, USA.

1900 US census has William Casson with his wife Margurite (sic), in Centralia township, Marion, Illinois.  William Casson age 74, married, head, years married 42, birth date June 1826, birth place England, marriage year estimated 1858, immigration year 1863, occupation Machinist, father and mother both born England.

1900 census for his wife Margurite, age 70, married, number of living children 0, birth date May 1830, birthplace England, mother of how many children 1, marriage year 1858.

The 1910 US census could be the same William Casson, Kansas Ward 3, Jackson, Missouri. Immigration year 1866, age 84, born England, widowed, relation to head Father in Law. Living with daughter Anna Casson age 54, single, born England estimated 1856.  Head of household is William J Graham 31 born Missouri, Kathryn Graham his wife 25 born Kansas, Samuel J Graham 18 Kansas nephew and Mary E Graha Niece 12 Kansas.

1870 US census for Centralia, Marion, Illinois has William Casson age 44 born England Machinist, with wife Margret (sic) and daughters Elizabeth 19 and Alice 16 (indecipherable name, possibly mistranscribed, could be Anna or Hannah)

Margurite was William's second wife, and William's daughters Elizabeth and Hannah/Anna were with mother Sarah Greenwood.

Sarah died in Manchester, England in 1858, and William married Margaret (probably Cummins) in Manchester, England in 1859.

Thanks this is very helpful.

The Samuel J Graham who is 18 on the 1910 census must be the son of Samuel J Graham 1852-1899?  And as Elizabeth Casson Graham died in 1907, this could be why two of their children are living with William J Graham in 1910, along with Grandpa William Graham and Elizabeth's sister Hannah/Anna?

I am going to look for a map to see where these places are.
