The birth with no name!
« on: Wednesday 22 May 19 12:26 BST (UK) »
Hi all, so I am driving myself a little crazy with this and decided it needed finer minds than my own!

1) Is it possible to identify a person born in NZ by their dob alone?
2) I know there is a genealogical society which produces various disks but I am not sure if the birth one would allow a search just by dob?

I have the date of birth and likely the area - but have been unable to find a birth record for him under any of the likely surnames in NZ BDM.

He died not knowing who his father was.  The mother was a VERY sad story and I have put in a fair bit of work and effort trying to identify a likely father for this person.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks, as always,
Carol

You can search FamilySearch for his first name and year of birth and then try each of the resulting surnames in the NZ Registry's online index where you can also designate an exact date of birth.  This could take awhile if his name was John  :D

Hi Debra - thanks for the info.  I tried Familysearch for NZ with ALL births (no names listed) during 1907-1911- nothing useful.  Absolutely nothing when I plug in his christian name, or his mother's names in any variation:(

Regards, Carol

Sure, thanks Janette:)

Raymond Saville b 9 Oct 1919, New Zealand.  Possibly Hastings, Hawkes Bay area.  Mother: Christina McCusker.  Father unknown, but likely in Bay of Plenty area around time of birth.

To clarify, his mother had married a man by the name of Saville and had 2 daughters with him.  Ray was born after she left that marriage but he had used her married surname.

I know a fair bit about Ray's life ... it is his birth and early years I am digging around for.

Thanks!

Using the search on FindMyPast where you can put in mother's christian name and child's christian name nothing comes up,I wonder if he wasn't registered.Did he have a birth certificate?

Cheers Janette

I don’t think the index on FindMyPast is complete, either that or the Search doesn’t work properly.  I’ve just searched for my father in-law and his siblings who were conveniently born in Auckland either side of 1918, and I can’t see one of them, yet the pre 1919 one shows up on the NZ BDM list

Maybe you are going to have to wait until November 1919 when 100 yrs will be up, and might find him under Saville on the BMDs

Hi Carol,

There is a tree for Raymond, on Ancestry,  perhaps contacting the owner and see what they have with regards to the birth record.

Cheers

A long shot and you may have already checked it out.

Im wondering if the Receiving home may have information on Raymond's father. And or if a birth certificate had to be presented when they were admitted to the home.

She came from New Plymouth about a month ago in the hope of getting work, but with two young children—one an infant in arms —tho handicap was too great. Mr Page, S.M., said he would not enter a conviction, but he advised the accused to stay with the Salvation Army, which would look after her until she was able to get work. The, two children had been sent to- a receiving home.

This might help with different names she went by.
