Looking at the 1861 Census, none of the children seem to have been baptised at that point.

Charles and Susannah only married on 23rd July 1862 in Exhall, Warwickshire, just after three of the children, Thomas, Mary and Emma were baptised on 6th July.

Jane, with them in 1861, may have been baptised on 6th April 1865 in Exhall, born on 29th August 1852, but she is the daughter of Joseph and Mary, and it would mean that she was born in Q3, rather than Q2.

Thanks David.

As a matter of interest what information on the Census record indicates the baptism please?  I did not know that it was possible to tell from the census so this is good news to discover.

You are right that the Jane baptised in 1865, is a different person.

Charles & Susanna had their youngest children baptised 6 Jul 1862 and they married 23 Jul 1862; on the 2 Aug 1862 the family immigrated to Australia.

I looked at the census and then tried to find baptisms to match but found none to for the exact dates. They may not have been baptised at the normal time because their parents were not married.

I have found the other Jane in 1861, daughter of Joseph, b Market Bosworth c1825, and Mary.

I am not sure why there is no baptism for Sarah Jane and her elder sibling at the same time as the others. Perhaps too many at once and no time later, prior to leaving England? Perhaps the cost etc.?

Thank David.  I genuinely appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

I hav purchased some of the childrens birth certificates but like you only located baptisms for the younger children.

Maybe the parents had to provide proof of the younger children's baptism as proof of the moral standing of the parents; proving them to be good people suitable as immigrants to the colonies?

I dont know who is Jane in 1861, daughter of Joseph, b Market Bosworth c1825, and Mary.

WAIN is my maternal line so its highly likely to belong to my family as yet unexplored especially those from Market Bosworth.

I forgot to mention Mary's former name of Smith.

In case you don't have the details, Jospeh married Mary Smith on 16th October 1847 in Astley Warwickshire. Joseph's father was John but Mary gave no name.

The witnesses were Thomas and Elizabeth Wain. I believe that Thomas was Joseph's eldest brother born in 1814 and Elizabeth, nee Linney, was his wife, living in Hinckley in 1851. Married Q4 1841.

I also wondered why I couldn't find Jane's birth record but she was Mary Jane Q4 1852 in Foleshill.

Leicester Chronicle - 17th December 1842
Poisoning. — A few days ago, Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Wain, of Bond-end, Hinckley, mixed, either from accident or design, some arsenic with some flour, which was afterwards made into some gruel and partaken of by herself and two children, and all were of course dangerously ill from the effects. Mr. Cotterill was promptly in attendance, and we are now glad to hear that hopes are entertained of their recovery.

The children were probably her illegitimate son and daughter, John and Prudence Linney. They appear on the 1851 census as does Charles Wain whose birth was registered near the time of the poisoning.
