Henry Hollis
« on: Thursday 23 May 19 21:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, looking for some inspiration on Henry Hollis my gg grandfather who is elusive.
Born 1820 Wadenhoe, Northamptonshire, son of Thomas and Isabella Hollis, youngest of 13 children.
Married Ellen East 2 March 1845 in London, occupation Wine merchant.
On 1851 Census living at Hornsey, occupation Porter age 30.
2 daughters - Emily Emma born 1850 and Anne Caroline born 1858, Anne's baptism 15 Aug 1858 states father Henry is a Railway trackman.
Can't find Henry after this time, on 1861 census Ellen is listed as married and in Toy & Fancy trade.
1871 Census Ellen is married and a Confectioner.
1881 Census Ellen is single and a housekeeper at St Mary's Church Marlborough, death 1882.
On Anne's marriage 2 Jan 1888 father Henry is recorded as deceased.
I cannot find Henry on the 1861 or 1871 Censuses, I have been working through all the deaths for a Henry Hollis but nothing conclusive.
There is a Henry Hollis with wife Harriet in Stepney on 1871 Census, died 1872 but wrong Henry.
On London City Directories 1865 Henry Hollis listed at "Samson's Castle" Public House Bermondsey ??
Did he have another family, I am running out of thoughts, all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Without sounding rude, are you sure the records you mention are all the same Henry? The occupations don't seem to line up. I can see a Railway trackman becoming  a porter, but if he was a wine merchant in 1845, that's a fair career change in a short space of time.
The fact there is a Henry Hollis listed as a publican in 1865 lends more weight to my question.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Henry was a wine merchant when he married Ellen EAST and Ann's baptism does say he was a railway trackman.  This is her birth:

HOLLIS, ANNE  CAROLINE
Mother's maiden surname: EAST
GRO Reference: 1858  S Quarter in SAINT PANCRAS  Volume 01B  Page 62

However I doubt that Henry HOLLIS was Ann's father and may have been long gone by then.  Ann was the only child that survived to adulthood and she was born 8 years after her sister Emily.  I cannot see any children registered in between them.

Debra  :)

Hi, I agree all the different occupations don't seem to add up, that has concerned me too.
Henry was born in Wadenhoe in 1820, on the 1841 census he is living with his mother and is an Ag. labourer. There is a criminal record for a Henry Hollis in 1939 aged 19 for larceny, received 6 months imprisonment from Northampton court.
Perhaps he moved to London and lied that he was a Wine merchant at his marriage, I don't know.
In 1851 he is a Porter.
On Anne's marriage record it states Henry is deceased but his occupation is difficult to read, it looks like Excise man?

Early children of the marriage:

Isabella Ellen Hollis mmn East, Jun qtr 1846 Shoreditch (buried 23 August 1846, aged 5 months)
Elizabeth Ann Hollis mmn East, Dec qtr 1847 Shoreditch (buried 12 June 1848, aged 9 months)

On Elizabeth’s baptism (5 Jan 1848 St Mary, Haggerston) Henry’s occupation was porter. Perhaps he was a wine merchant’s porter and inflated his status on his marriage.

Check out the Henry Hollis on the 1871 Census - ref. RG10  3360  74  10.

Wondered of Place of Birth was the enumerator's effort to capture Wardenhoe?

Thank you Hanes Teulu, I think you may have found my man on the 1871 census, that's great.
