Thomas Crittenden in Sussex

Hello, hoping someone might be able to shed light on this chap.   I suspect he was born May 1818 Thomas Crittenden in Sussex, son of Hannah Crittenden.  But it seems perhaps a father "Thomas Balcomb"?   In June qtr 1839 Thomas Crittenden married Alice Whiteman.  It appears they migrated to Aust soon after marriage, and children born as Balcomb.  Alice Balcomb died in Aust 1854, Thomas remarried, more children, and died in Aust 1906 aged 88 according to obituary. (sometimes Balcombe). I do not know whether they migrated as Balcomb or Crittenden, nor why the change of name if they are one and the same family.  Would appreciate some help.

In 1853 Thomas seems to be going by the name Balcomb and already in Australia.
Thomas Balcomb is prepared to deposit £12 each for the following family to come to Australia but none of them did and his money was returned.
James Whiteman 55  Ann Whiteman having an attack of paralysis they declined to travel
Anne 54
James junior 28   Married and declines to emigrate

Presumably they are Alice's parents and brother and had been going to NSW.
On the 1851 census they are in Udimore Sussex ag lab born Udimore,Ticehurst and Udimore.

Thomas arrived with Alice as Cruttendon on 30 Sep 1839 on the Amelia Thompson
He was 21 shoemaker Sussex protestant can read and write
Alice 22 house servant Sussex protestant can read only

They had married on the 13 April at Peasmarsh but I don't have the full details.Fathers etc.
By 1845 and daughter Alice's birth they are Balcomb


There is a Thomas Balcomb transported from Sussex in 1820 .He was on the Prince of Orange who arrived 1821.He was convicted 29 July 1820.
A coincidence or could he be Dad?

The baptism for Thomas Crittendon is 24.5.1818 at Brede s of Hannah Crittendon pauper.
Hannah married 28 Dec 1818 at the same church Thomas Balcomb of Beckley.

So is your Thomas born 1818 taking his father's name and Mom and Dad were just a bit late getting married or is Thomas Balcomb senior new on the scene?

A bit on the Convict Thomas Balcomb
Born 1794/1796 in Sussex.
He was acquitted of Larceny in 1815 but was found guilty of horse stealing in 1820.
He was sentenced to death but reprieved  to transportation for life.
He reached Australia 12 Feb 1821
He is 24 labourer
5ft 9 fair /ruddy complexion brown hair and hazel eyes.
Always just gives Sussex as birth place.
He gets a ticket of leave 1829,1836,17.12.1839 and finally 21.8.1843 after it was cancelled 3 times.

It looks like he died at Bathurst NSW 1882 and his parents were Thomas and Lucy
This would fit with a baptism at Heathfield 10.1.1796.

That's not to say of course he is your Thomas Balcomb senior of Beckley.
Unfortunately I can't get burials up for Beckley or nearby Peasmarsh where Thomas Crittendon and Alice where married.May be you can do better.

I have studied the convict Thomas B and think can safely say he is not this Thomas' father.  I am now wondering if Hannah and Thomas Balcomb (Snr) can be found on the 1841 or 51 census? (According to a Pioneer Register, Alice Balcomb died in 1845 of exposure having been lost overnight night after a Church service.  I add this for any future readers)
