HMS Hood - used as Barracks in Gillingham Kent
« on: Friday 24 May 19 22:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my great x 2 grandfather Joseph Travis. All I have is a marriage certificate as physical proof.
His name was Joseph Travis, he married Ellen McGeary/McGarry in 1880 in Gillingham. On the marriage certificate his residence is the HMS Hood ( But not the famous one that sank). This one had the same name but was deemed not sea worthy, so was used as barracks for the Royal engineers in Gillingham.
He was then sent to India, where he had a few children and Ellen died.
Will the barrack residence be enough to find his details? There are so many Joseph Travis's that I am getting confused. I have got ancestry membership, but that is a dead end too.
Please can you advise what I could do or if anyone has information about the HMS Hood and its men who housed on it.
Thank you
Travis (Kent, India), Ward(Old Warden), McGeary
Baker (Barnwell), Bellamy (Kempston), Merryweather (Southill), Clarke(Little Hallingbury, Essex)

Did they go to India  before the 1881 census?

Names and occupations  of fathers on the marriage certificate?

How old were they?

Joseph’s exact occupation on marriage cert.

Hi

I cant find them on the 1881 census.
Joseph Travis was a Lance Corporal and he was 26 in 1880 and his residence was H.M.S Hood, Medway
His father was Joseph Travis and he was an auditor

Ellen McGeary/McGarry ( spelt both ways on different documents) she was 21 years old in 1880 no profession listed but she lived at 60 Pier Road in Gillingham. Her Dad was Thomas McGeary/McGarry and he was a pensioner.

They had a daughter in 1880 named Mary Elizabeth Travis, so I'm guessing Ellen was pregnant at the time of her marriage.

Starting at another end.  Elen L Travis born I India father in the Royal Engineers 1896  Ernest W 1891, Sidney H 1893 - are these his children (or some of them?)

He was 13783 Joseph Travis.  His record (it has the wife's name and some of the many children, three mentioned above) is on Findmpast. Link

Yes I think that baptism is right,
They are on the 1871 census in Islington, Father Joseph an Audit Clerk for G.N.R.

(And subsequent years. I’ll leave the thrill of the chase to you  :))
