Clapson Family
« on: Saturday 25 May 19 08:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for birth details for a Richard Clapson. He married Mary Parks 1747/1748 in Warbleton. He may have been born around 1725. I have found one who was born to a Thomas Clapson but he died in 1732. There are family trees with Richard having parents Benjamin Clapson and Mary Gascain but I cannot find a birth.
Thanking you
Donbeth

Thankyou Artifis, It does look like the correct person. Benjamin and Mary had 4 children at Heathfield and then 2 in Warbleton, the last child John was born in 1714, That is a huge gap to this Mary and Richard. Maybe his mother isn't Mary Gascain. What do you think, would it be probable to have such a long gap without a lot more other children born.
Cheers

I found the following children baptised at Heathfield:

Thomas 18 July 1697 s/o Benjamin & Mary
Joseph 20 April 1699 ditto ; buried 28 May 1721 s/o Benjamin & Mary
Benjamin 04 April 1701 ditto
Susan 21 Jan 1705/5 d/o Benjamin.

I couldn't find a baptism for John.

1705/6 to 1714 seems a large gap unless there were unsuccessful pregnancies and the to 1724 ditto.

I wonder if the first Mary died and Benjamin re-married another Mary but I can't find evidence of that nor for the first Mary's death/burial.  A Benjamin Clapson did marry a Jane Cornford 25 Dec 1722 by archdeanery of Lewes special licence - SFHG Sussex Marriage Index no record of the actual marriage.

Hello donbeth

Something to think about.

A Benjamin Clapson married Mary Gascain in Heathfield 13 Oct 1696.

They had a son Benjamin baptised  1701 & daughter Mary baptised 1708 at Walberton.

A Richard Clapson married a Mary Parks in 1747.
Could Richard be the son of Benjamin born 1701 & brother of Mary born 1724

The burial of Mary in 1747 lists her names as Mary Gascain Clapson so definitely the above lady - Find a Grave Index.

Benjamin is listed as born 1671 at his burial in 1750 - Find a Grave Index.

I think it's strange that there's a six year gap in the children between Mary in 1708 and John in 1714 then the twelve year gap to Richard in 1726.

There is a baptism at Warlbeton on 07 May 1724 for Mary d/o Benjamin and Jane - Jane was buried 19 June 1758 w Benjamin.  This make me wonder if there was a mix up in Richard's records in 1726.

This Benjamin was possibly the Benjamin baptised in 1701 as Omega said.

In case you haven't got it Bernjamin & Mary Gascain married 13 October 1696 at Heathfield.

Can't find a baptism for her.

Hi Artifis and Omega, Thankyou for your time. I will go to Lydia Clapson, and her parents were Joseph Clapson and Mary Watson, he was christened 22 years after his birth, born 1760 c 1782.His parents were Richard Clapson and Mary Parks. I found John Clapson on the Weald. Looking at it, it seems more probable that the Richard I am after is the son of Benjamin and Jane Cornford or as you say a mixup with the dates for Richard born in 1826 and maybe it should be 1816, but the Weald info doesn't have any more children after John. As for Mary Gascain her records are totally elusive.
Cheers

I agree about Mary being elusive, I've checked various spellings in Sussex and wider surrounding counties to no effect.  Could be she came here from Europe.

Hello artifis, There are quite a few spelling variances for the name Gaskin. It does sound French, I think that will elude me for a long time but I am happy with the outcome on the Clapson families. Thanking you
