Newspaper archives
« on: Saturday 25 May 19 10:07 BST (UK) »
Hello.  My first post here.

I'm trying to find if there are newspaper archives for the Bristol evening post and other Bristol newspapers for the early 1960s.  Does anyone know how to access any such archives?

My biological father died in a car accident in the Avon Gorge in 1962, before I was born and was put up for adoption.  I have no records of him (he was married and having an affair with my biological mother).  Sounds macabre but it was front page news and the only record I no if his existence.  Glad if any guidance.  Thanks.

I have had a look and can't spot anything easily.

Are you still local to the area?
Try contacting the local library archives.
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Pauline s idea is a good one, local archives. There is a account of 3 men (Aged24 and 25) from Bristol who sadly died in February 1962  in a car crash in Bristol.
Not really fair to mention their names on the forum but did you know your fathers name, perhaps you could post initials?
There could be more candidates though of course

Cathy
There is also an account of a car that crashed down Avon Gorge with 4 deaths but that was in Sep 1963

Hi,

The accident at the Avon Gorge occurred just before midnight on 16 September 1963.  3 men and one woman were killed. Reports of this appear on many newspapers.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search/british-newspapers?date=1963-09-01&date_offsetdate=1963-09-30&keywords=avon%20gorge

The accident  early hours of February 9th,

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results/1962-02-01/1962-02-28?basicsearch=accident%20three%20men%20bristol&somesearch=accident%20three%20men%20bristol&exactsearch=false&retrievecountrycounts=false

If you use the connections above, “British newspaper archive” you will be able to see snippets of info, to read full article you have to pay.

Both accidents are on findmypast, which you may be able to access free at your local library.

Hope this assists

Thanks for the replies.  I believe he died November 1962.  He was the only occupant, and drove the car into the cliff face in a suspected suicide.

I'll follow up on the suggestions. And thanks for the help and sensitivity.  It's kind and appreciated.
