Morning LS!

Here is an old map which shows both the mill and the farm.

If I could explain a bit about it - the first watercourse (on the left) is the Brecon & Monmouth Canal which opened in 1796 or thereabouts.  The second is the River Usk where there is a weir and presumably a leat to serve the mill.  The Roman Road is now approximately the route of the A40 towards Brecon.  This location is about three or four miles east of Brecon.  I'm going walkies later today - possibly in that area and definitely along the canal - so if I happen to pass the mill I'll see if I can get a photograph (foliage permitting of course).

What a joy to have found a rootschatter so close to the location. I look forward to the results of your walk, GS. Will you be going anywhere near the farm?

Apologies, LS, but we didn't get to the canal.  I should have known that it would be impossible to find a parking space anywhere near it on a Bank Holiday!  But as a consolation prize here's a clip from google maps of the farm, which is actually on the A40, with a gated lane beside it leading to the mill itself.  I won't forget about a photo of the mill, but will try again when things are a bit quieter!

There appears to be a cottage attached to the rear of the main farmhouse so maybe this is the house you're looking for.

Regards
GS

And here is the gate and track that lead to the mill.  These are to the left of the farm and the brook flows into the River Usk  between the farm and the track.  You can see the Brecon Beacons in the background.

Hi GS,
Thanks for your wonderful pictures. Sorry for the delay in getting back but I wanted to do some more research on the area.

I have gone through all the censii from 1841 to 1911 and I find that over the years there have been three main Millbrook habitations in Llanhamlach, variously called Millbrook Farm, Millbrook Mill, Little Millbrook and, often, just plain Millbrook. In 1861 two 'Millbrooks' were marked as being vacant, and in 1881 even Little Milbrook was vacant.  In 1891 Millbrook Cottage appears and then just vanishes from the record. Even following the occupier's names from one year to the next, it is not really possible to determine which locations may have been misnamed by a lazy or inexperianced enumerator.

I have also found the 1839 tithe map showing the three main "Millbrook" locations and I attach an annoted snippet of this. Looking at the building outlines in each location, all of them would appear to be composed of more than one structure which might, at the time, have housed another family.

To which of these three locations do your pictures relate?

As a native of the area, I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
