Please date this Photo of Richard Hill - Indiana, USA

Hi,

Could you please date this photo of my 3x great grandfather, Richard Hill? He was born circa 1813 in Yorkshire, England. He immigrated to the US in 1841 on the Barque Hope, and settled in Indiana in 1843.

Well not much to go on is there. If you have the original it would be better to show all of it.
You would really have to date it from how old you think he might be in this.
His jacket style could be anywhere from the 1870's & into the early 1900's.

That is the entire photo. Nothing written on it, just shown as is. He died in 1900 so that's a pretty good range of dates you gave.

Don't really know his age here but judging his hair on his head....maybe 65? 70? That would put the date of photo taken between 1878 and 1883.

In comparison, here is a photo of Richard's son here - with the photographer information. I don't know if this photo was taken at the same time as Richard's or if it was later on. His son George, pictured here, died in 1895 at the age of 52.

The style of lettering is typical 1870's but could be into the 80's. He looks quite young & in his 30's I would think so would have to have been taken around 1875. If the cardstock has rounded corners it would be later.
This would age the old gent in his 60's & he looks a lot older than that to me.

With that said, here is a later picture of George, without his beard. What year do you think this could be from? Is it possible that this picture style could be the same time as Richard's or do you not think so?

The vignette style of composition was common in the 1880's-90's. I would suggest this is 1880's & probably mid-late decade.

Interesting - thank you! Do you think then that the original photo I posted of Richard Hill could be the same timeframe then - 1880s-1890s? Not sure how old you think he looks in that photo?

I can only refer you to my first answer in that it would depend on how old you think he is.
Men are difficult to date as their clothes styles changed little over the decades & we would need the extra info from the cardstock it's mounted on.
